H2O2 question
    #1953357 - 09/26/03 02:45 AM (20 years, 5 months ago)

i am dunking/cold shocking the first of a dozen cakes.
i mixed spring h2o2 with water, 200ml to 5 liters.
i put the cake in a zip-lock bag and added the h2o2 solution.
the peroxide reacted strongly with the cake for a minute or 2 (fizzing) is this normal?

Thats not good dude, why did you dunk with hydrogen peroxide. Good luck, I think you fucked yourself and used to much hydrogen peroxide if it fizzed.

200ml to 5 litres works out to a ratio of 25 to 1,much less than people use for misting or to wet their perlite.
i used peroxide in my dunking water to reduce the risk of contams while birthing.i'm not the first to do this.

the point is to kill any endospores that might come into contact with the cake during exposure to air during birthing.

Hanky, I wouldn't bother doing that. Aussie tap water is ok. Besides, colonised cakes are generally safe from contams (provided all the BRF/verm was colonised).

I've dunked cakes under water for 12 hours and then injected neat tap water into the cakes before putting to a fruit chamber. No contams.

That H2O2 dunk will slow down the cakes you've got, so they'll be set back on fruiting.

it didn't go blue and it looks fine now,i thought i'd screwed up and had to go serching for posts that confirmed that other people have done h2o2 dunks,i used a weaker dilution than is recommended so i think everything will be fine.

Don't forget to roll them in dry vermiculite, case top and bottom and then spray in tap water...get the vital wet stuff up.

That sounds good and good going too on the print/grow.

btw, I'd upload some pics of "rolled-in-verm-cakes" to "not-rolled-in-verm-cakes", but using the kb's atm to upload poppy/opium pics, but believe me the cakes rolled in dry-verm and sprayed give more booty.

I used h2o2 many times after cleaning the contams ;first everything psssssss and then in three days or so fruiting starts, however,it's possible that I was too lucky.peace.

hmmmm from what i've read tonight after thinking i'd read wrong previously, theres nothing wrong with a h2o2 dunk,it might slow things down by a day or so but it wont kill the myc'.
but it will certainly kill any contam spores.

Its should also be noted that h2o2 solution comes in a number of different strengths, I think most references are to 3% solution, but what I get over the counter here is typically 6%. About 5ml of 3% (10 volume) per liter is about the lowest effective dosage, and would be about right for Agar, you can use slightly stronger for misting, and stronger still for the bottom of the terrarium I use about 8ml (3%) per liter.

Dr. R. Rush Wayne's guide has pretty much the total lowdown on h2o2.

I was gonna ask this myself psilomonkey....how strong was your h202? cause most use 3% diluted 10:1 with water....I use h202 all the time and I've never seen the fizzing reaction some talk about

I've seen it fizz. It fizzes whenever it finds something to kill. Just like pouring it on a wound.

Not quite true, h2o2 kills things by bashing them with a rather active oxygen radical. Some organisms produce an enzyme that break down the h2o2 safely into water and oxygen. Mushroom mycelium produces this enzyme so can protect itself, spores and bacteria don't so get killed by the oxygen radical. The fizzing is the h2o2 being broken down into water and oxygen.
If you put some h2o2 in a glass and bung in some mashed mushroom (anytype will do, dowes not have to be magic), then put a lit match over the top of the fizzing mass the match will flare up due to the oxygen being produced.

well it's been 24 hours since i removed the cake from the h202 dunk.
i rolled in dry verm, double end cased and misted, then placed it in the terraruim.
now theres mycelium growing thru the end casing.
so i guess that a little fizzing from the h2o2 did nothing to damage the cake.

Hanky, as siad I'd show some pics. Just squeezed in a missing jpeg on the 400kb's a day...

Cakes not rolled in vermiculite :frown:

Cakes rolled in vermiculite.

The foil ball seen in ^above pic of cake in background grew to cake left of tray below...

Same cake, note foil ball for ID.

Cakes (all pre-rolled in dry vermiculite & then sprayed) in various stage of flush with cases...

Roll them in the verm Hanky.
