Dunking is absolutely necessary for cakes, in my opinion. It hydrates them, cakes suffer from a lack of fruiting moisture in the substrate, and this refills it.
Dunk means to submerge your cakes in clean water for 12 hours. That's it.

wow... def. had no clue about that. So just submerge it in water for 12 hours, then go about the normal casing method of breaking the cakes up spreading them and casing?

Well, you asked about birthing, which suggested to me you plan on fruiting them as whole cakes.
It's not neceassary to dunk now that you're going to case them.

Bleach is H2O2, and I wouldnt worry bout using it in dunking, but still make sure to use it when spraying, it helps a lot. Also when dunking cakes its always best to jam them in the fridge during the 12/24hour period as this will 'cold shock' them and will help them to fruit alot quicker.

oooh, ok. Which method do you guys prefer? Casing or cakes? Everywhere I have read says casing makes for better yields but if i hear otherwise I might be apt to try out cakes instead.

I've gotten great flushes off of just cakes for my first time, and it's pretty hard to screw up. I tried two casings, and lost both to contamination. I know it's probably not that hard to do them properly, but I got sort of lazy on the sterilization of them. My point is, you're almost guaranteed to get a few flushes off of cakes without too much hassle, where to get good casings it's going to take the extra research and the extra care on the sterility.
-------------------- Excerpt from one of my textbooks: Therefore, between a then and its matching else, there cannot be an if statement without an else. Statements must be distinguished between those that are matched and those that are unmatched, where unmatched statements are else-less ifs and all other statements are matched. I wonder if that would make more sense if I was tripping when I read it.
