Ok im about to birth my cake and dunk it, but i dont have any h2o2. Is h2o2 really neccesary or could i just put it in the water without worry. Im gunna cold shock it at the same time if that makes any difference.

u can use purified water also... hell i've used just straight tap water successfully, just depends on how many chemicals your local water company chunks in there with it... h2o2 isn't really necessary as a fully colonized cake is pretty damned contam resistant...

Hydrogen Peroxide (h202) is easy to get. It costs less than a dollar a bottle. Get it at any shopping center or grocery store in the health & drug section where you find rubbing alcohol, antibiotic ointment, etc.

Oh, yeah. It's always in a black or dark brown bottle. (To prevent light from degrading the peroxide.)

Don't use H202 for dunking a perfectly colonized cake. Just dunk the cake for 12 hours and then rinse it off under the spicket to get the slime off and the set it up for fruiting.

^^^^^^ WRONG, using h2o2 in your solution helps ward off any thing that could have gotten in your container. This is some of the worst advice ive seen
-------------------- "I celebrate the Earth, my home, my mother, my grave, and as long as men are Man they must, if they would preserve the integrated being, do the same---[and preserve]--this rank casual hungry smelly sweaty lusting transitory body, my oozy pulpy liquid-bag-swollen body, bones, blood, hair glands, my bejeweled sex; I love and celebrate it all. never to let men forget that they are animals as much as gods---that is one thing I shall say." I'm telling you man, it doesnt hurt! I promise. I use h202, gallons per week..everything that touches my mushrooms...humidifiers, misters, and when I dunk all my casings. Helps me to last 7 or 8 flushes if I want to. I have ziltch problems with contams and zitch problems with h202 messing up my shit in ANY way.

Please know what your talking about before stating something.
H202 is perfectly safe. It can be used to sterilize your drinking water. Its good to gurgle with. It is the dangerous and unhealthy combonation of WATER and OXYGEN. God forbid I indirectly injest either of those two things.
Edit: I'm just adding this to add that you may be kidding. I didnt see the winky guy, I sure hope you were....

To steralize water you use a relatively smal amount of h2o2. I'm just saying that it is still a chemical and if you use to much it's not good for your shrooms or yourself.

H202 breaks down quickly into water and oxygen. It can NOT be absorbed as h202 or even remain h202 in light or exposed to air/living orgainisms.

Look, if you directly drank H2o2 maybe...
But the mushroom isnt goint absorb h2o2 and excrete that as a byproduct for ingestion.
Mercury, or some other metal maybe.
I know people who use h2o2 on cuttings and cacti grafts all the time as a precaution. Doesnt show up in the plants.

Also - h202 degrades at light and room temp(just very slowly), so again, I dont think it would make it back into your digi track.

That doesnt make H2O2 it a *good* thing though. Meaning that I agree with not using it too much. Why not dunk in 100% H2O2 (3%) solution then?
When I was a boy I took hairballs owls had spit out. Ever seen a mouse-skull changing in H2O2? It starts as a dirty hairy skull, in the H2O2 it turns into bright white ivory.
For the rest the database is packed with questions like this, (search!!) and the consensus is IF you wanna use H2O2, you use it like 1 volume H2O2 on 10 volumes H2O.

just a little off topic: i had a big bottle with tap water and h2o2 inside (about 10:1). after a couple of weeks i noticed it was becoming very cloudy (white), put it in a glass bottle and waited until the white stuff deposited on the bottom. this is the result. what the hell is that white stuff???

h2o2 is not going to harm you if you ingest miniscule ammounts. I've used it as a gargle daily for years now. It helped clear up some gum problems i was having. (I hate flossing) Even though I spit it out, I'm sure I swallow like 1/4 teaspoon of it... never even got gas from it. although h2o2 isn't safe to swallow full strength because it can "burn" your esophagus and stomach.
Your body naturally produces hydrogen peroxide, believe it or not. Neutrophils, which are a form of white blood cells, produce hydrogen peroxide as the first line of defense against toxins, parasites, bacteria, viruses and yeast.
lepiota, is that well water or city water? It could be that you have very very hard water, and all that stuff is just minerals settling on the bottom. Was it hot or cold out of the tap? hot water carries more minerals in it from both the metal pipes it travels through and the hot water heater. (a good reason to never use hot tap water when cooking. it may boil faster, but it's full of heavy metals) It could also be a shitload of dead coliform or cryptosporidium but i doubt it because whatever town you're in would be having a massive outbreak right now. who knows. Look at it under a microscope if you have one.

it was cold city water. it is good to drink, doesn't taste like chlorine as many city waters do...

fuckin weird. yeah i'd say look at some of it under a microscope if you can... i'm curious as hell now myself. it should be obvious to tell the difference between an organism and something inorganic... although pinpointing what it is will probably be impossible.
If I saw my tap water doing that I'd probably get a damn good filter for it.
