Tape Over Inoculation Holes?

I am comparing the PF Tek and the MMGG. They are pretty much the same but one difference that I think is important to note is that the PF Tek says to place masking tape over the inoculation holes after yu inoculate the jars where as the MMGG doesn't even mention that. What is the tape for? Is it to keep out contamination or to keep IN humidity? If its to keep out contamination, I thought that was what the dry verm was for. I'm worried that if I use tape there will not be enough gas exchange for my fungus. I am also afraid that if I don't use the tape the humidity level will drop too much and my substrate will get too dry. Should I use tape or not and why?

Tape is a very good idea. After about 65 to 75% you can remove the tape for better air exchange but this can possible start a contamination. Micron Magic Filter Disks are a great idea. Good air exchange and less contamination. They are also avaiable at www.mycosupply.com

you dont really need the tape.just dont mess with your jars all of the time and maybe cover the tops with tinfoil..the tinfoil will help with contams but also let it get the air exchange it needs for faster colinization..its your choice though.

Trust me mate - if you tape up the holes, the jars will stall 90% of the time as there is no air exchange. Go down to your local chemist and buy some alcohol swabs - after innoculating, cover the holes with these swabs - as they will act as filters and prevent contams. but provide quality air exchange

how do you use the filter disks. are they instead of the cap, or do you put them over the top verm layer and put the cap back on?

The original reason it is suggested in PF tec is so that when you boil the jars immersed in water the vapor and falling drops don't over moison your jars.

I don't use holes or tape. I just take the lids off and innoculate quickly. Then the lid goes back on. Very rarely have I ever had a problem with this method.

Well, you could do a test, since everyone's enviornment is different. Someone with untapped holes, in a quiet house with no animals may benefit, while another with a lot of pets and foot traffick may contaminate all jars. I know some people who use coffee filters over the tops of lids pierced, to keep out the big meanies. Smaller ones can fall into the holes of the filters, but usually are stopped by the thick verm layer. MAybe a dark closet is your best bet. This way you can leave holes untaped, and yet cutdown on contams by not opening up doors. I thoughtt ape over holes was to keep water out while pressure cooking. Jars do need that essential air. Its all experimentation. But A thick layer of dry verm on top of cake is a very effective barrier for most contams. Good luck -DCC If your going to dine with the Devil, bring a long spoon.Edited by DeathCapChick on 09/07/01 11:34 AM.
