anything from europe '72 and may '77, look for 5 star ratings if you're on archive.org

It sucks but it's trial and error. if you want to be assured good quality you have to buy Dicks picks.

I can't tell you how many hours I have spent downloading shows that I will never listen to because of the poor quality.

It's worth it though

also look at the source of the recording...soundboard recordings are going to be clearer

www.archive.org has a load of quality, nice recordings. Some aren't so great, some are really low quality, but there are quite a few gems in there if you look.

Check out the ones with the most stars and the most reviews.
Hell, here are a few I've downloaded and that I enjoy:

2/26/77 - Swing Auditorium
1/2/72 - Winterland Arena
6/10/73 - Robert F. Kennedy Stadium
5/8/77 - Cornell University

Plenty, plenty more on Archive.org.

07/08/78-- Red Rocks Amphitheater
06/15/85-- Berkeley, CA
6-22-85-- Alpine Valley, WI
09/10/91-- Madison Square Garden

The key is to look at the source. If it says "SBD" then it probably sounds really good.

Good point, kosmic. Yes, soundboards are generally much better than AUD (audience) recordings, but there are a few exceptions. My personal favorites are matrix recordings, which basically mesh a soundboard and audience recording together. The sound quality on those is usually very nice.

True, but sometimes the set lists look so inviting that you have to give it a try and sometimes it works out and other times it don't.

Yes I agree matrixes are nice in the way that they capture the ambiance of the concert experience without compromising the sound quality significantly. Also I've heard some phenominal AUD recordings but they're few and far between. Some listeners are pickier than others too.

I've seen a few on archive.org.

This one for example.

Edit: Usually if I'm looking for a Matrix, I go to the year I want and just use my browsers find function to find the word "matrix."

Nothing like advanced searches. I think you'll find pretty much every Grateful Dead Matrix (and a few more random bands as well) right...

Here.

Someone needs to:

1 Download every single Grateful Dead show in .shn format from archive.org via FTP.

2 Extract, then convert the .shn's directly to 160kb/s mp3's.

3 Go through and check the sound quality of every show, keeping the good recordings and discarding shows that aren't.

4 Then use websites like www.deadlists.com or www.dharmarose.com/deadbase/dbsearch.html to tag individual shows/songs with accurate metatag information; artist, venue, year, song, notes .. etc...

5 Then offer to do the motherload of B&P's by cloning the entire disk.

Taken from viperrecords.com ---
This coming year brings us one step closer to Revolutionary Vol.3 and the completion of the series. But before that project is released, there will be 2 Immortal Technique CD's that will drop in 2005. The first will be a CD/DVD that has a wide range of show footage and exclusive interviews, with Technique. It will be accompanied by a CD of some Remixed and unreleased material, including a CD version of the 2 new songs that will be the A and B side of the 1st single off ???The Middle Passage???. Of course the vinyl will be available and we will subsequently give away a few pieces on this site when the time grows nearer to the release. And of course those of you that were a part of the original street team and were promised an EP when that was still in the works will get free vinyl.

After the release of the CD/DVD I will do a string of shows, a very short tour of the US and maybe some days in Europe before going back to putting the finishing touches on the new album, ???The Middle Passage???. But for the meantime I keep myself busy in the hood networking and hustling to make these next two releases as strong as possible. All shows until the release of the CD/DVD have been severely limited to one a month in a separate region. The first one will be posted soon. But I will not return to NYC as I said in the last message until I am ready to release the first single of ???The Middle Passage??? and showcase new material. I was originally going to do this at the EXIT show, but the pace of the night was changed, my time was cut short and the club was really on some bullshit. That will probably be the last time I do a show up in there.

All my peoples were delayed in entering and in the end I didn't want to try and rush through new material. I apologize to those who waited for hours outside in the cold while the club did nothing and didn't get to the see the show because they changed the age limit at the last minute. I will definitely make sure that the release of the CD/DVD is in a good place that can cater to my needs and doesn't treat Black & Latino people like they are being brought onto fuckin Riker's Island. Either way much respect to Green lantern and his staff for having me there, I sold a bunch of CD's to a market that I have only had a small amount of exposure to, the blinged out commercial radio people did support for their part but the venue wasn't really set up for merch. All in all we gained some new supporters and got to network with good people from the streets that live this shit for real like me.

The New Year has brought a time to reflect on gain, loss, and of course the undeniable fact that this planet that we live on doesn't answer to us but rather meets our mistreatment of it with it's own agenda. This New Year I reflected about everyone across the globe suffering in sorrow from the constant poverty and disease to the recent horrific tsunami, Revolution is not just about ideals but about the evolution of humanity to care for those of us with the least as much as we care for those of us with the most. I wish those that are with us peace and those that left us peace within for their journey. I hope that everyone that is reading this appreciates what they have, and prepares for the impact of what I have been working on this whole time. Once again it's about to happen.

Peace & Respect,

Immortal Technique

***This show is going to be publicized largely and it is very important that as many Immortal Technique supporters, make it to this show to represent to the industry how we feel about Revolutionary ideas and the way our people have been brutalized, I will showcase some new material too. I feel as if I don't have regular fans I have supporters who while they serve me in their economic and physical presence, I in term serve as well. The people that have come to see the Revolutionary action I have tried to put back into Hip Hop with others are people who love lyrics and hold me to a standard, A Revolutionary is nothing without the people, who he or she fights for. Much Respect to everyone who bought Vol.2 and please come out to THIS show.

Peace.

Converting SHNs or FLACs to MP3 and then distributing them is baaaaad. A major faux-pas in the world of digital music trading. The reason SHNs and FLACs are used is because it compresses the audio but doesn't shortchange the sound the way MP3 does. It's fine enough to convert your own shows so you can put them on you mp3 player or burn them to mp3 CDs for your use... but putting them into cicrulation.... that's a no-no.
