rye tek questions

for quart jars, the various teks seem to differ - some say 1 cup rye, some say 1 1/2 cups rye per quart. my friend would prefer to use 1 1/2 cups/qt since 1 cup plus water seems to only fill half the quart. Any objections?

Also, after soaking for 12 hours should the grains have absorbed all of the visible water in the jar, or should the water level still be a few centimeters above the top of the grains? My friend does not want to have too much or too little water, which is more problematic?

Finally, my friend wants to know if anyone does BOTH presoak and steeping? (i.e presoak for 12 hours and then steep for 1 hour)?

My friend does the same, except he soaks for 24 hrs, then cooks till tender. The only thing your friend needs to be concerned with on the amount is that he has plenty of room to shake.
