Thompson's remains kill bystander in freak accident
Hunter S Thompson wanted to go out with a blast, and did. Ending in Tragedy for a 47 year old Aspen Resident Shirley McCracken. The famous author of such works as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and Hells Angels, commited suicide by a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His final wish was to have his cremated body shot out of a cannon. His family complying with his wishes, did just that. As the sun set, Hunters Family and friends gathered atop the Rocky mountains, and read a passage from his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
there was madness in any direction, at any hour... You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was `right', that we were winning... And that, I think, was the handle -- the sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply `prevail'. There was no point in fighting -- on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave... So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark -- the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.
than the cannon was fired. Directly into Shirley McCracken who had just reached the peak of Mt. Elbert. The blast did not kill her on impact, but resulted in a fall to her death. She left 2 children.
Sheriff Walt Goodman, said that no-one would be charged with in the accident. "I saw the whole thing, she just came over the ridge, and POW. Hunter was all over her like white on rice. Than the poor lady just fell off"

Got a question about a substance? Erowid might already have your answer! Have questions about the mushroom experience? The Tripper's FAQ may have your answer or someone else might have had your question before. I know up on the top you are seeing great sights, but down at the bottom we, too, should have rights.

it made me laugh initially... then, i felt bad, not because i thought it was true, but because i was laughing at the thought of hunter's corpse killing a mother of two. after reading this post, though, i just had to laugh again.
we'll miss you, hunter.

mt elbert is 14000 ft high. a lady climbed to the peak and fell off, in the middle of winter? i doubt this is true.
you'd think the associated would also use spellcheck and correct punctuation.

LMAO! that's poor shame for the woman and now her motherless children, but I can't help but laugh at such a thing. This should be listed as an example next to 'freak accident' in the dictionary.

Sounds like complete bullshit to me.
Don't believe everything you read on the internet, including this.
My crazy delusional uncle was telling me about how the CIA arranged for the 9/11 attacks and shit. He reads all these conspiracies off the internet. What a dumbass.

Here is a story that is all over the news sites, but it doesn't mention anyone getting killed, or even the cannon ceremony taking place yet.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200502/s1309011.htm Last Update: Wednesday, February 23, 2005. 11:06am (AEDT) Thompson wanted ashes fired from a cannon US author Hunter S Thompson, who committed suicide last weekend, wanted to exit this world in a style befitting his extraordinary life by being fired from a cannon, a friend says.
It is believed the larger-than-life writer of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas stated in his will that he wanted his ashes to be fired out of a cannon following his funeral, plans for which have yet to be announced.
"I believe he wanted to be shot out of a cannon," friend Troy Hooper told AFP.
"I understand it's in his Will," Mr Hooper said, associate editor of the Aspen Daily News, based near the Colorado home where 67-year-old Thompson apparently shot himself on Sunday.
"That's Hunter's style - that's how he would want it," he said.
"He was a big fan of bonfires and explosions and anything that went bang and I'm sure he'd like to go bang as well."
Mr Hooper, who became friends with father of "gonzo" journalism about five years before his death, cited reports that Thompson told his son, Juan, that his after-life ambition was to become cannon fodder - literally.
"That's exactly the kind of stuff he would say all the time," he said of one of the most important American literary figures of the 20th Century.
It was Juan Thompson who found his father's body in his rural home in Woody Creek, near the ski resort of Aspen, after he apparently shot himself in the head on Sunday night.
Mr Hooper, who saw Thompson last week, says Thompson had been in pain following recent back surgery, following a hip replacement and after he broke his leg recently.
Thompson, famed for his LSD and alcohol-fuelled literary exploits, did not seem "more distraught than usual" in the days before he died,
Mr Hooper says that Thompson was "often either up or down".
Sheriff's department investigators in Woody Creek, where Thompson lived for more than 40 years, say he appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
