Thompson probably planned suicide

DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- Journalist Hunter S. Thompson did not take his life "in a moment of haste or anger or despondency" and probably planned his suicide well in advance because of his declining health, the family's spokesman said Wednesday.

Remains may be blasted out of a cannon

I figured as much, but it makes me feel better knowing he made the decision for the right reasons. It's almost better than dying of old age.

That's cool. Better he did that than to grow old to death.

What balls that man had! I believe that when you die, you go back to a place of pure love and all knowing, etc. but there's still a part of me that isn't sure weither there is a hell. You have to be EXTREMELY sure of what's on the other side to kill yourself. Suicide is the ballsiest thing one could possibly do IMO.

No offense to HST or you Learyfan, but I think suicide is the dumbest thing you could ever do. I mean, no matter how sure you think you are, there is always a chance that your wrong. My theory is, Im not sure what comes next. Could be heaven, hell, reincarnation, hopefully level 2 as I like to say or... There is an off chance that there may be nothing after this world. In which case, I figure I better experience as much of this world as I can before the possible end of all existence. Even if there is more after death, we probably will never get a chance to explore this reality ever again.

Now some smart asses will say "good! this place sucks anyway. All this war, hunger, hatred, evil, etc isnt worth a damn." But to me its all experience and we should embrace it. No matter what we experience we may never get the chance to do it again. The only time suicide seems rational is to avoid certain torture or extreme pain. If your dying of cancer and it takes every ounce of energy to gasp for a breath and you know thats how it'll be for the next three months, Call Dr. Jack Kevorkian for gods sake. Otherwise, you never know what might be around the bend :thumbup:

I agree...everyone says that choosing suicide is cowardly...but in my opinion you either have to be incredibly brave or just careless to go through with it.

I once was tripping on mushrooms and started psycho-analyzing what suicide could mean, and I got a very negative feeling about suicide. It could have just been social conditioning coming out...but my ego had been pretty broken down by that point I thought so I don't know. It just became glaringly evident to me that suicide was very, very...very bad. It sort of shocked me, because I'd lived my entire life not caring about suicide, and have often been suicidal. But at that moment in my trip, my ideas about suicide changed...

But I also believe it is all about intent. Suicide means different things to different people. In the context of killing myself, my intent and state of mind would have been something bad so that's probably what I was "sensing" in my trip.

But who knows, sorry to jack the thread!

Death is tricky.

Well......then we don't really agree. I don't like suicide or think anyone should kill them self, but it is an extremely brave thing to do.

However, consider this. People SLOWLY kill themselves every day. They smoke cigarettes, they drink and eat bad shit, there's a million ways you could slowly kill yourself every day. Why is a quick suicide like Thompson's any worse than a slow suicide like a cigarette smoker's?

blek! the slow suicide arguement. In smoking cigarettes or doing anything of that sort, you are not trying to get closer to death. Though it may be a consequence of the actions, it is not the reason for doing so. A gun to the head is most certainly aiming for death.

When people kill themselves cause they cant take life anymore, then I think its cowardly. If you do it cause you feel your done here, then I think its a silly choice, but not cowardly.

Well, from my perspective suicide is brave because of the fantastic Unknown Factor of death.  If you continue living you at least have a vague idea of what you will experience on the planet earth.  I still think it's cowardly and...bad (can't explain it) but I know I don't have the courage to go through with it.

I am totally about the unknown factor of death. It is actually the one thing I look forward to most, but it is going to happen no matter what. So you might as well stick around while you can I say. Theres always a road you havent walked down.

How could anyone possibly say that killing yourself is cowardly? The afterlife is the ultimate mystery. No one knows for sure what's on the other side. You may go straight to hell and be tortured for eternity. How can putting yourself in a situation where you may be tortured for eternity be considered cowardly??

And killing yourself slowly is just as bad as putting a gun to your head. People know the risks of cigarettes. If you smoke, then you know damn well that you're bringing yourself closer to death every single time you put that stick to your mouth.

But I think that often times people arent actually thinking about whats gonna happen next, after they pull the trigger. I didnt say that suicide is always cowardly. If you kill yourself because your girlfriend left you and you cant bare life without her so in a fit of loonyness you shoot yourself, then its cowardly.

as for the other part, suicide is defined as intentionally killing ones self. I am not trying to kill myself when I take a bong load. I am trying to enjoy the relaxing qualities of some fine cannabis. Yes I know that this is bad for me, but it is enjoyable.

If engaging in potentially harmful activities was suicide, than living in the city as opposed to the country would be suicide due to increased pollution.
