Yeah, just read that myself. He was quite an innovator. He even created a new style of journalism, where the author puts himself in the work. He will be remembered.

RIP H.S.T.

Holy shit

http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/news/sns-ap-obit-thompson,1,4177598.story?coll=bal-entertainment-headlines&ctrack=1&cset=true

ASPEN, Colo. -- Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counterculture writer who popularized a new form of fictional journalism in books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself Sunday night at his home, his son said. He was 67.

"Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family," Juan Thompson said in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News.

Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis, a personal friend of Thompson, confirmed the death to the News. Sheriff's officials did not return calls to The Associated Press late Sunday.

Juan Thompson found his father's body. Thompson's wife, Anita, was not home at the time.

Besides the 1972 drug-hazed classic about Thompson's time in Las Vegas, he is credited with pioneering New Journalism -- or "gonzo journalism" -- in which the writer made himself an essential component of the story.

An acute observer of the decadence and depravity in American life, Thompson wrote such books as "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail" in 1973 and the collections "Generation of Swine" and "Songs of the Doomed." His first ever novel, "The Rum Diary," written in 1959, was first published in 1998.

Other books include "Hell's Angels" and "The Proud Highway." His most recent effort was "Hey Rube: Blood Sport, the Bush Doctrine, and The Downward Spiral of Dumbness."

there was madness in any direction, at any hour... You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was `right', that we were winning... And that, I think, was the handle -- the sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply `prevail'. There was no point in fighting -- on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave... So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark -- the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

kinda odd timing, about a week ago i finaly picked up fear and loating and started reading it... the ending is going to be wierd now... pretty good book so far, the movie is pretty right on, with the exception of a few parts cut, or a few sayings re-arranged...

I am deeply saddend by Hunter's passing. I have always enjoy his prolific ramblings which never ceased to amaze and entertain me. I feel that a lifetime lived as hard as his, was bound to end by ghastly means. I had no idea it would end like this. I will be lighting a candle tonight, and I will let it burn in remembrance of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson- A true American Hero.

Lets keep in mind that it is unknown wether the shooting was intentional or not. Hunter was a man who loved his guns. LOVED his guns. He would tote those fucking things everywhere, and really, was a hazard with them waiting to happen.

Although, I know in my heart, that life became too much for Thompson. And he was in control of the situation. Gonzo will live forever in the pages of history.

sometimes the pain in unbearable
and sometimes
ending it with your own hands makes sense when it hurts.

maybe he wanted upstage arthur miller?
or maybe he was tired.

I hope he had a good passing
and let go as he broke through
while ego was dissolved
by the light.

but we all let go
how can we not in the face of ultimate reality?

those who have taken high dosages of psychedelics
are perhaps better prepared to let go.
I know he did just fine.

I know of this. I watched a documentary made in the late 70s or early 80s, that talked about it. It's called "On the Road to Hollywood". The giant fist (with 2 thumbs) in the mountains.

You can try and download it from Bearshare http://www.bearshare.com/home/ p2p or something like that. that's where i got it from. I'll put it in sharing. Just type in search "fear and loathing" to find it. It's a BBC documentary.

How can you be sad about a counterculture lunatic shooting himself?

THAT IS HOW IT'S DONE!

He wanted to do it, and that's how you do it if you want to go out like a REAL rock star, you get assassinated, overdose, or blow your throat off with a shot gun.

Hunter S. Thompson gave us the perfect end to his madman legacy.

Praise real heros.

Let's look at this pragmatically - some people who've never heard of Thompson may see the news of his death and wonder 'what's the fuss all about', pick up a book of his and be inspired.

He may be gone but his words will always be around to kick culture up the arse.

I was utterly shocked when I heard the news when I woke up a few hours ago. At the same time though - it seemed of character of him. HST was a man who held life by the balls. It's not surprising that he chose to die on his own terms, instead of losing his dignity with severe old age. I don't think he killed himself out of despair or depression. Rather, I believe he was just "cutting to the chase".

This ruined my whole night last night.

I'm still upset as hell.

I've been getting used to him coming out w/ some new book of ramblings every year or so to kick my mind back into high gear and get me thinking.

No more of his great writing is what i'll miss most.

RIP.

I was on 4g of shrooms last night when I heard the news, "How appropriate" I thought. To be in the zone I mean. I have yet to read one of his books, but like others, loved "Fear and Loathing".
I don't have to worry about getting behind on his writings now, since he obviously won't be writing anymore!!! (funny, huh?---yea, I know)

Anyway, we can live another day and we'll be happy (hopefully you guys will be happy) and he won't live another day and he'll be happy too. It's crazy like that.

Peace

Thompson's passing will be mourned by many. Hunter was a man that had the respect of everyone. The very culture that he sarcastically rebelled against, understood and saw reason in his writings.

H.S.T. had left his mark on the world and will not be forgotten, every man's dream.

I'm quite impressed with the media coverage on CNN. You would think with a radical like HST that his death would be more of a blurb, but they had guests on American Morning recalling fond memories of Hunter and everything. Wouldn't surprise me if Larry King interviews a family member or something this week. It's nice to see the culture abroad paying their respects to Hunter S. Thompson. It seems to be the big story right now.

Indeed. All of us have those "Time and Place" memories that we will never forget.. oddly enough, they are often associated with psychedelics. I tripped at an old abandoned house with a friend by a river. We camped, set up a fire, and ate acid. Needless to say, that was about 5 years ago, but it feels like an eternity. If I were to return there I would probably be brought to tears of joy.

Wonder what HST would say? Let me pretend, at the sake of being criticized, at this troubling moment. (Writer prepares himself by picturing Johnny Depp doing him in the movie, F&L...)

Thompson was a big Hemmingway fan. I'm wondering if Hunter knew he had some serious illness. I totally respect what he did and I'm even happy for him. Few people control their own demise and it fits in with his personality so well. RIP

I was having a tooth extracted this morning when I found out.
They had just put the N2O on and gave me the remote to the TV in the room and said we'll be back in a little bit. I turned to CNN and saw it.
Weird way to hear the news. A slight N2O buzz going and then that.

RIP HTS

I just watched Fear and loathing and I'm hearing it's OST. Tomorrow I'll say bye to THE man by tripping ala Raul Duke.

I'm sure he did it conciously, that man got his fate in his hands.
He did what he wanted, when he wanted, and feared no repercusions.

"Too weird to live, too rare to die"

noeticbuzz :

Yep it's great, I think it appeared in the first editions of Fear and loathing... It's amazing, untill a week ago I didn't know who this man was.

A friend just sent me this, and I thought you guys would like to read it:

-

Let's face it- the yo-yo president of the U.S.A. knows nothing. He is a dunce. He does what he is told to do- says what he is told to say- poses the way he is told to pose. He is a Fool.

This is never an easy thing for the voters of this country to accept.

No. Nonsense. The president cannot be a Fool. Not at this moment in time- when the last living vestiges of the American Dream are on the line. This is not the time to have a bogus rich kid in charge of the White House.

Which is, after all, our house. That is our headquarters- it is where the heart of America lives. So if the president lies and acts giddy about other people's lives- if he wantonly and stupidly endorses mass murder as a logical plan to make sure we are still Number One- he is a Jackass by definition- a loud and meaningless animal with no functional intelligence and no balls.

To say that this goofy child president is looking more and more like Richard Nixon in the summer of 1974 would be a flagrant insult to Nixon.

Whoops! Did I say that? Is it even vaguely possible that some New Age Republican whore-beast of a false president could actually make Richard Nixon look like a Liberal?

The capacity of these vicious assholes we elected to be in charge of our lives for four years to commit terminal damage to our lives and our souls and our loved ones is far beyond Nixon's. Shit! Nixon was the creator of many of the once-proud historical landmarks that these dumb bastards are savagely destroying now: the Clean Air Act of 1970; Campaign Finance Reform; the endangered species act; opening a Real Politik dialogue with China; and on and on.

The prevailing quality of life in America- by any accepted methods of measuring- was inarguably freer and more politically open under Nixon than it is in this evil year of Our Lord 2002.

The Boss was a certified monster who deserved to be impeached and banished. He was a truthless creature of former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover- a foul human monument to corruption and depravity on a scale that dwarfs any other public official in American history. But Nixon was at least smart enough to understand why so many honorable patriotic U.S. citizens despised him. He was a Liar. The truth was not in him.

Nixon believed- as he said many times- that if the president of the United States does it, it can't be illegal. But Nixon never understood the much higher and meaner truth of Bob Dylan's warning that "To live outside the law you must be honest."

The difference between an outlaw and a war criminal is the difference between a pedophile and a Pederast: The pedophile is a person who thinks about sexual behavior with children, and the Pederast does these things. He lays hands on innocent children- he penetrates them and changes their lives forever.

Being the object of a pedophile's warped affections is a Routine feature of growing up in America- and being a victim of a Pederast's crazed "love" is part of dying. Innocence is no longer an option. Once penetrated, the child becomes a Queer in his own mind, and that is not much different than murder.

Richard Nixon crossed that line when he began murdering foreigners in the name of "family values"- and George Bush crossed it when he sneaked into office and began killing brown-skinned children in the name of Jesus and the American people.

When Muhammad Ali declined to be drafted and forced to kill "gooks" in Vietnam he said, "I ain't got nothin' against them Viet Cong. No Cong ever called me Nigger."

I agreed with him, according to my own personal ethics and values. He was Right.

If we all had a dash of Muhammad Ali's eloquent courage, this country and the world would be a better place today because of it.

Okay. That's it for now. Read it and weep.... See you tomorrow, folks. You haven't heard the last of me. I am the one who speaks for the spirit of freedom and decency in you. Shit. Somebody has to do it.

We have become a Nazi monster in the eyes of the whole world- a nation of bullies and bastards who would rather kill than live peacefully. We are not just Whores for power and oil, but killer whores with hate and fear in our hearts. We are human scum, and that is how history will judge us.... No redeeming social value. Just whores. Get out of our way, or we'll kill you.

Well, shit on that dumbness. George W. Bush does not speak for me or my son or my mother or my friends or the people I respect in this world. We didn't vote for these cheap, greedy little killers who speak for America today- and we will not vote for them again in 2002. Or 2004. Or ever.

Who does vote for these dishonest shitheads? Who among us can be happy and proud of having all this innocent blood on our hands? Who are these swine? These flag-sucking half-wits who get fleeced and fooled by stupid little rich kids like George Bush?

They are the same ones who wanted Muhammad Ali locked up for refusing to kill gooks. They speak for all that is cruel and stupid and vicious in the American character. They are the racists and hate mongers among us- they are the Ku Klux Klan. I piss down the throats of these Nazis.

And I am too old to worry about whether they like it or not. Fuck them.

Hunter S. Thompson, 2002
