"unusual" coco coir and crushed shells
    #3789190 - 02/16/05 12:25 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

i'm planning to use these ingredients for a casing mix (together with vermiculite and peat moss):

this is crushed seashells, but it is not for feeding birds as usual, it is for water filtering and ph correction

and this is coco coir, but it is not in bricks and it is not for plants, it is for making ground in reptilariums

are they good as casing material ingredients?

from that picture that doens't look like coco coir. it looks more like chunks, which shouldn't be used...

wrong kind of coco coir.

the picture you are showing is coco coir bark.

you don't want the bark kind.

you want the coco coir that comes in bricks.

Like this one.

good luck!~

yes i know i want bricks but that would mean ordering it separately (=twice postage). what about mincing it with a blender?

and what about the other product, the crushed seashells? they are for being put in the aquarium filter for adjusting the ph of water. since i want to adjust the ph of my casing maybe they are the right also for that?

No, you need coco coir in brick form as Roadkill stated. Why don't you take a trip to your local pet store and pick up a brick?

yep

look at my avatar, grown on peat + garden lime, and a very little bit of verm.

Actually, peat is rather acid, so its better that you add some fine grounded lime as well.

i have ordered those crushed shells. the description says it is pure and sterilized crushed seashells, and they adjust the PH of water. could someone tell me a good casing mix formula including:

peat moss
crushed seashells
vermiculite

otherwise i will start a long quest for coco bricks...
thanx
