New and a Question

I am new to this site, hope you guys can stand an older beginner here (mid 30's).
I have already moved from PF to casing at this point. Some people say to use vermiculite as a bottom layer before the substrate. Has anyone ever tried to add maybe half of perlite to this. In other words, would a 50/50 of perlite and vermiculite make a good base layer for laying the substrate layer on.
Thanks

actually, you probably could do that, but... a lot of people make a layer of perlite at the bottom of the casing, followed by vermiculite, then colonized-substrate, followed by more verm (a thin layer, usually) anyways, it definately helps to keep the casing moist. if you decide to use perlite, remember to wet the perlite, strain the perlite, and even sometimes let the perlite dry a little bit before you use it as part of your casing. you don't want it to be soaking :P
btw -- welcome to the shroomery :) generally speaking, people are cool here, and the mods are especially cool ;)
peace out!

Thanks. I think I will try a 50/50 slighty wet the next time. I will bake the mix for a little to pasteurize some.

If you can find Coco Fiber use it. Just crumble substrate directly on bottom of casing tray cover with 1/2"-1" coco reydrated (non pasturized). Wait three weeks (following standard proceedures for casings) and boom, there ya go. Never had a problem with coco, easy to use, colonizes quickly.

coco fiber (aka Gro-Brick) is a good idea, I've never used it, and don't like to sterilize casing (I use pure verm, and don't sterilize it, I've done pretty well) but... i hear the coco fiber is pretty resistant to contams. which is definately good. very "airy" too. I just gotta find some, or order some online :P
peace out!

HEY OLD MAN IN MY THIRTIES TOO. YOU GOTTA START SOME WHERE. JUST WANTED TO SAY WATCH THE WATER IN YOUR CASING. I HAVE A TRAY IN THE CHAMBER RIGHT NOW THAT IS GROWING LOTS OF FLUFF (THREE WEEKS) WHILE ALL THE OTHERS ARE DOING THERE STUFF. I STARTED TO INVESTIGATE YESTERDAY AND FOUND THE CASING TO BE VERY STRONG. ITS LIKE MUSHROOM IS GROWING ALL THROUGH THE CASING RATHER THAN MYCELIUM. AND WHEN YOU SQUEEZ A SMALL PIECE, WATER DRIPS OUT. I HAVE HAD GOOD RESULTS WITH THE 50/50 CASING TEK, OUTSIDE OF THIS ONE WET CASING. NOT TO TAKE AWAY FROM THE COCOA FIBER TEK. I HAVN'T TRIED IT YET. PEACE
