i have had good luck with the 9er tek just brown rice but if your going to grow on the cakes and not case them then you may not get good results the vermiculite is sort of an interior caseing when your growing cakes you might want to try the 9er tek with the straw tek that there has been alot of disscussion about both here and at drool donkey just use the search feature to find out about it also i think it was mycelium5150 ? that knows quite a bit about the straws

The reason that vermiculite is sometimes dangerous and unhealthy, is because it contains asbestos. The only way that asbestos in harmful to you is when its airborne. Inhaling asbestos dust(slivers) can cause lung cancers. If you plan on drinking or eating vermiculite, your completely safe. A bigger worry of mine when extracting from a cake, would be ingesting some sort of contaminant. Be careful.

when my friends teddy bear first began to make shroomies she used this recipe...

1/2cup rice
1/3 cup H2O
Pinch of calcium

It looks like a cake, but when you are the teddy says that the cakes are nice and edible after they have fruited. The calcium seems to promote more rapid growth since it will take a while for the substrate to be fully colonized. (it is pure substrate.. and the mycelium will just take longer for full colonization.)
