Using course vermiculite.... cant find schultz anymore :(

So after hitting about 10 different stores I was finally able to find some vermiculite. Anyway the stuff I found was not nearly as fine as the schultz bags I usually pick up I didnt think this would be a problem until I started mixing the substrate. I used the satndard PF tek amounts and it seemed the course verm didnt absorb the water nearly as well as the fine verm. SO I had to kinda fiddle with the ratios until I got something that felt about as moist as my previous batches. My question here is has anyone ever experienced this and if so did it create a problem? Do you think I should have used the watery substrate with the textbook ratio or was it better to add more verm and brf until it felt right? Now Im worried that theres not enough water in the cakes to start mycelium growth... if anyone has any input on this it would be appreciated.. thanks
Also whats up with the schultz brand anyone know if it was discontinued? I keep hearing rumors but no hard core proof as their website still lists it as a product of theirs if you do a search

The cakes seem to colonize coarse vermiculite faster in my opinion. It's all I use.

OK for those of you that use the course verm do you have to redo the water levels? Cuz like I pointed out before using the pf tek numbers it was like soup...

Use those formula's with a grain of salt (that doesn't mean add salt ) squeeze the substrate to test moisture content.

I like to use the mixing spoon to hold back the verm and look to see if water is pooling at the bottom of the bowl underneath it. When you hold the bowl up and tilt it, a small trickle of water should pool at the bottom. Then it is ready.

So squeezing vermiculite/BRF/peat moss in your fist and seeing if it is to oversatured by drops running out around your fingers tells you nothing about it's moisture content? Sorry but It's worked great for me for almost a decade. Squeeze lightly and a little water should drip. The compressed medium should break apart in your fist with just a touch.
If it doesn't work for you or it isn't the way you do it doesn't mean others don't have there own personal tek's.

use a coffee grinder to make fine verm. works like a charm. be careful, they can turn the shit to powder if you leave it on too long
