Vermiculite Question

OK, a FOAF has been having a hard time finding vermiculite in his area. He finally found some in a small garden store. Its Hoffman's Horticultural Vermiculite. Now, another friend has told him the horticultural vermiculites is fine grade and that is not what you want, that he should look for medium or medium fine grades.

Question is, can you use this vermiculite for substrate use (MMGG tek) or should my friend continue his search. If so are their any drawbacks to using it? Has anyone else used this with success?

Or is my friends friend just talking out of his ass.

Vermiculite runs in premium,large,medium,fine, superfine and micron grades. Fine/super fine vermiculite (kind of resembles soft sand) wont work suffice enough due to the fact there is no air and room for the mycellium to grow. Rather the substrate would just get compacted down (think of compacted sand) your looking for medium grade. sizes can depend on the supplier of it as well.
