Hi, I have this crazy idea about using cotton balls as a substrate, casing or whatever! Has anyone ever used cotton in any step with success? It can hold water like verm. and poss. act like rye or brf. What'cha think? (~~~

how would you sterilize it? i dont think cotton would go to well in a pressure cooker.

to sterilize you could boil or nuke it! as for nutrition just add some limestone or what have you. it seems to me that it could replace verm!!!p.s. i'm a newbie and have only innoculated my first honey/water today!(~~~~

Is vermiculite really that hard to find?I know around my area you can get bags anywhere....There always seem to be a million people who want to find something otyher than verm...wouldnt cotton be more expensive?

I can't find verm. arouned here! A bag of cotton balls is only about $1.50! Does anyone know if cbs are treated with antibacterials?:( If they're not one could mix in brf with damp cbs. It seems poss, cheap and simple!

if you're really so hard up to do a non-verm/brf substrate, why not check out the 9er tek which uses just rice, no verm in the substrate.

I wouldn't waste spores, or mycelial water on experimental substrates on your first jars.

cheap....maybe, possible...good luck, simple...now thats pushin it.
Before goin out on cotton balls or crazy shit like that why not experiment with soil...or dirt out side or something

The 9er (rice) tek can be found in the grow/find section of the shroomery. It does not call for plain white rice but rather brown rice so you may have you check that you have the correct stuff. When using a mycellium syringe you should still innoculate 1/4cc a hole, 1CC per jar. Also, concerning this cotten ball tek: you would have to do major experiments concerning water levels while mixing and fruiting a jar, assuming of course, that it did work. The PF Tek works great and if you cant get vermiculite try to order it off the internet. It's dirt cheap

I dont know if cotton would work. what I do know is the difference between cot/verm. the thing about verm is that even though its soaked in water it still holds plenty of air and that a big difference if you think about how cotton handles water. vermiculite is also an inert material witch means it will not decompost and stay sterile for a longer time.
But hey, why not test it as long as you dont depend on it.

A friend grower i know used cotton instead of perlite in its terrarium, then he puts a piece of aluminun foil with many holes above the wet cotton and then the casing trays or cakes.
I also use cotton in one of my experiments, i'll tell you if i get it right.
