I lived in a box like that once.  I suggest you pack it full of life. I got a few plants and a fish tank. It makes it much better.

"Apparently there is a great discovery or insight which our culture is deliberately designed to supress, distort and ignore. That is that Nature is some kind of minded entity. That Nature is not simply the random flight of atoms through electromagnetic fields. Nature is not the empty, despiritualized lumpen matter that we inherit from modern physics. But it is instead a kind of intelligence, a kind of mind."

I lve in a shoebox apartment too. But it's pretty well maintained, in a nice neighborhood, and it's cheap! I've thought about getting a plant to brighten things up, but my crazy cat would probably eat it...

i bought a good sized spider plant to hang from my ceiling. I noticed a huge difference last night. i was feeling all grogging and getting headaches from the stale air in the morning. i was very comfortable in my room last night though.

I was going to recommend a spider plant, but you beat me to it  Spider plants and peace lillies are two cheap, easy to care for plants that are actually known for cleaning the air. Fish tanks are really good for the air (and putting water in the air) and then you can water your plants with the fish tank water, they'll all love you!
