Storing Used Cakes
    #3759935 -

Once cakes are done fruiting how long are they able to be stored in the fridge? I would like to save the cakes to spawn outside in spring, will they last 2 more months in the fridge or better to toss them? Or should I put them in some straw/poo, let it colonize and keep that refrigerated?

Or should I just toss them?

Spawning a used cake sounds hopeful to me... I HAVE NO CLUE THOUGH... but am just also wondering what the answer to that is.

Toss 'em, all the nutrients have been consumed. They aren't good for anything at this point.

I think if you put them all in say a ziploc in the fridge, yes they will last two months until you can bury them outside. The fridge will slow the myc's metabolism down.
Foaf dried some used small straw logs. He is going to bury them in a poo/straw bed in the spring to see if the myc revives.
It's worth a shot, the worst that can happen is nothing, the best is that you will get mushrooms.

Actually diver, the pH becomes unbalanced before all the nutes are used up. They won't grow anything, but the mycelium still has a chance to grow if introduced to a new substrate.

I am concerned however that if they stay in less than optimal conditions with little food for more growth they won't last. I think I am going to put them into a bulk substrate and let it sit in teh fridge. It should start to colonize very slowly and by spring should jsut need a quick jump start to finish colonizing. *I think*
