making PF cakes (pictorial)

Here is a pictorial on how to make PF type cakes. We will put it on our website as soon as we have all the pics complete (including pictures of the fruiting cakes). But for now here they are:
These polypropylene jars are used. They can withstand the heat of a pressure cooker.
Four holes are poked into the lid with a sharp pointy object (a syringe needle for instance)
The two basic ingredients: vermiculite and brown rice flour.
First the dry ingrdients are mixed: 4 cups of vermiculite, 1.5 cups of riceflour.
Two cups of water are added and the mixure is thoroughly mixed:
The resulting mixture will look like this:
The jars are loosely filled with this mixture:
A dry layer of vermiculite is put on top of the mixture:
The lids are put on.
And a double layer of tinfoil is crumpled over the jars.
The jars are now ready for sterilisation in the pressure cooker.
(more pics to follow, the jars are in the cooker right now :-)

These jars are normally used in plant tissue culture. You can just as well use jars with holes punched in the lid.

Inoculation:
The jars have cooled down:
The needle of the syringe is flamed and the tinfoil is removed:
The jar is inocualted through the four holes that were made in the lid:
The tinfoil is replaced and the jars are put in a warm place to incubate

How much spore solution did you squirt into those? It looks like there are some really wet parts and there are some dry parts.

I think that it is quite important ,at the point where the dry top vermiculite layer is used, that you should note that the top of the jar should be clean of any substrate(wiped clean).
Very nice pictorial. Your help is much appreciated. Thank you Una. :-)
