Think about how they'd normally grow.. Mycelium grows in cow dung, and when it finally finds light when it reaches the surface, that's it's signal to grow shrooms.. The mushrooms are trying to get out of the stuff they're growing in and drop spores in an open place, so they use light as their way to tell where they're supposed to head to do so. If you want nice vertical shrooms, you're gonna have to find a way to get some light from above..

Use an opaque(collored) box with an translucent lid(or a plastic sheet.
Or cover the sides of your rubbermaid with something opaque(black sheets of paper) and use plastic sheet to cover it.

If your container is translucent and your lid is opaque just do what all the cool catz are doing and turn your container upside down. Just put the lid down, put the casings on the lid and put the top over that. Works great.

And if your using perlite just put a thin layer of moist perlite on the lid and go about your business. Makes it easier to clean up perlite too.

HQ saw this: someone cut a hole in the solid lid, a bit smaller than the pre-cut plexiglass you can buy at home depot. she saw the edges rimmed with caulking, laid on top of the square cut in the lid, and the air pressed out of the caulking. when dried, electrical tape was used to add another layer of seal btw plexi and plastic lid. it wprks nicely, just dont set anything too heavy on top of the plexi or could could break the caulking seal. works nice when making a glovebox outta a plastic tub too.
