    #362075 - 07/27/01 03:50 PM (22 years, 7 months ago)

do you have to cook the jars in a pressure coocker or can you also put them in normal pots?

You can put them in normal pots, but for sterilization technique the pressure cooker is more efficient. I have read where pots work fine for many people.

yeah, if you put them in pots make sure you loosen the lids so the steam can penetrate well. also make sure the lid of the pot is a snug fit. and also don't have the waterlevel so high that when it boils it gets into the jars, you only want the steam.

i used a pot for my first 12 jars, and theyre working fine so far, just started showing mycelium, so i went ahead and did another 12, i think it will be fine, put some tin foil over the lid(especially if youre using filter discs) so as not to let water bubble in, this will work good I think, and is a cheap ghetto solution to the costliness of pressure cookers. peace and I hope your mycelium fruits:)

Also make sure the jars dont sit on the bottom put some kind of cloth down and let the jars sit on top of that this will prevent too much heat being transfered to the glass and prevent possible breakage.

I think the pot/steamer is fine for jars pfstyle but if you deal with any grain you best have a pressure cooker.

Overall, a pc is definately better and guarantees sterilization of your jars and equipment. You can even cook in it!
You'll find one at your local thrift store for about $2. Make sure the seal is in good condition and it has the weight.

True, a pressure cooker is better in the fact that it sterilizes better. But the question is, what substrate are you using? If you're working with a PF substrate, you can just use a normal pot for as long as you want.

But if you're using grain substrates such as birdseed or rye, you absolutely need to use a pressure cooker. A normal canning/steaming pot doesn't get hot enough to properly sterilize grain.

Hope that helps

I used to be one of those people that would say that you can get by without a pressure cooker. I never lost a jar to contaminants using a pot of boiling water to steam the mushroom fuel before innoculation. But none of my cakes or casings would last longer than two flushes without turning green on the inside. Now I am a true believer in the necessesity of a pressure cooker.

lol, why are u a believer all of a sudden????

i doubt it was the fact that u used the reg.pot that made your casings turn green, u see if u got a few good flushes of it already i doubt that contams passed the boiling-sterialization. More likely your area wasn't clean.
