Dung in the rain?

I sterilized some dung in a 180 degree water bath and I set it outside to hang, and It rained the next day. I know It got soaked from the rain and It's been about 48 hours now. I just want to know If I should still use it or not. Do you think It's still sterile enough to spawn?

Pasteurising doesn't make anything sterile. It just kills bugs, and some of the bad fungus's. Your still good to go, you just have to let it dry longer now.

Yeah It's only been about 2 days since it rained and then It's been in the 80s so I'll probably do something with it tomorrow then. Thanks.

are you kidding!?
If you live ANYWHERE even remotly close to civilization, rain is a contaminated bath of filth and bacteria!!! All pro athelites aviod exercising in the rain like the plague....
I would spend the extra time to pastureize/sterilize again. You would hate to wait 8 weesks only to find big green grossnes or worse.

Actually I did find a big green spot on one of the casings used with the dung in the rain, I cut it out cause it seemed to be isolated but I don't know if it will make it. I guess I'll have to check the weather channel next time before sterilizing.

Yeah, I don't know about that 'athelete' thing either. I love running in the rain. It's funny how most people have no idea how much fucking bacteria is all over their bodies, on their food, in the air they breathe, their clothes, their ANIMALS [kiss kiss]. Most of it is benign, without the plethora of shit out there, our immune systems would fall apart--for instance, people who spend a year or so down in Antarctica [a basically sterile environment, at least 'microbially deficient'] come back to the mainland and usually get sick immediately.
Now the chemical rain issue, that's another story, likely not too big of a deal for the hanging dung though. But I wonder if these hardcore atheletes have any idea of the chemical exposure they're getting in the shower everyday?
Dung shouldn't be sterilized. 180 degrees wouldn't sterilize it, I'd think the outside hanging period is a good thing, let some bacteria re-establish themselves.
Try growing a plant in pressure-cooked soil, you'll see :)

So your saying if I work in a semi-sterile room and have unsterilized horse shit I can still use it expecting pretty much the same results as before? Have you done it before? I doesn't contaminate? That would be awesome and a big time saver I just don't see how it would work. Do spores and bacteria in the air just not germinate on it or what. let me know. thanks

Yes, semi-sterile or even 'mostly-clean' works fine for inoculating dung. A few things to keep in mind;
1. Dung should be properly aged. . .no fresh greenies, the parched dry ones are best :)
2. Hydrated dung should have proper water content, not too wet/muddy-looking
3. Spawn should be clean, though sometimes questionable grain jars will do fine.
Once you have clean spawn, be it PF jars, birdseed, etc., you are pretty golden for going to a properly-prepared bulk substrate. And no question about it, the best shit I ever prepared had hot water poured over the dry pies, a lid placed over, soaked overnight, slight squeeze the next morning, mix with spawn. Nothing sterile about it, very often we see seedlings sprout as the mycelium rips through it.
Look at Anno's recent post on colonizing dung for good pics...

Yeah I've tried the jars and gotten some awesome results, I tried spawning and I got some awesome results. That dung in the rain came out better that I thought, that shits cranking I got crazy pins everywhere. This last batch I did take some fairly fresh dung not more that a week old, but it had dried some. I soaked it in a water bath at 170 for an hour, let dry and spawned with pink buffalo and they're doing great. I've never gotten such good results I love dung!! later
