Horse dung-A little help please-Anyone?

Thanks in advance for your time!

Can anyone please tell me why my horse dung won't colonize properly?

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I'm following Roadkill/Pavlov's Dog Horse Poo Tek. Assume that I've done everything according to that tek. Strain is Cambodian. Spawn has been both PF cake and also birdseed.

The spawn recovers and everything looks good and then after 2-3 days the mycelium begins to die and turn a greyish color. It never really even begins to spread into the dung. No bad odor is present.

I'm sure I pasteurized properly and I'm sure the dung is not too wet.

The dung was totally dry beforehand.

I used tap water. Could this be the problem? We have good tap water here as far as I know.

Has anyone else ever had this problem or know what it may be? How can I fix this?

What is the horse eating? This could be a problem. Otherwise I would say moisture or that it is crap from the stall rather then outside so it has a high ammonia content which raised the ph to high.

Sometimes horse stables spray fungicide / insecticides around to control flies, mites & fungus. You might try another source of dung.

Durban could be right. Check the PH.

Is everything the same temp when you add the spawn.

You sure your not over pasturing?

You might also initialy try adding a tiny bit of dung juice to the start up content of your spawn cakes or BS jars. If they do well & colonize fully. It should work when spawned into dung.

PHI think is the problem however if you sterilize your dung like some of my fire ants you have to use spawn bags. If you pasturize you have to use a spawning tek.

Durban...im curious as to what you mean by having to use spawn bags. Im not really sure what they are as to the fact that ive never used them.
I just pasturized the dung in a t-shirt tied at all the openings. Cause I didnt have a pillow case like was used in the Horse Poo Tek.
I did the tek for 2 bread pans. One does look better than the other. They dont seem to be as white and fluffy like the ones Roadkill posted. Im going to add a casing layer before popping it in the fruiting chamber. I was gonna wait till after the first flush but i feel safer just doing that now.
Anywayz....curious about the spawn bag thing. Just dont think its necessary.
Prob. the PH. Even if it was dried i dont think it would do what you described bassplayer.

The horses I get my crap from eat straw and some grains. I picked up the poo from outside in the open air...It was almost all dry and what was not I dried myself.

After pasteurizing I made sure the water content was right by squeezing all of it until no water dripped out. Maybe a drop or two.

I'm gonna add a tablespoon of hydrated lime to my pasteurization process this time. I hope it helps.

I use about 3 gallons of h20.

Maybe you`r dealing with carnivorous horses there bassplayer?
might sound silly but are your suppliers not feeding their horses some sort of meal that has animal products in it?
Sure it`s a long shot but still worth asking the question.

What temperature are you incubating at??

Compost, dung and straw will all create their own heat during colonisation.

I allways let colonize the dung at room temperature which is 73?F.

Well, the bag of lime I'm using says to add 1 tablespoon per gallon so thats what I did. It's on the stove now...

Ok, Ill keep it at room temp this time. Would you agree that its the PH Anno? If so, do you think I'm doing the right thing by adding 3 tablespoons of hydrated lime? Thanks!

sorry for jumping in on your thread bass, but i got 6 five gallon buckets of dung from the stalls. it was about 95% dried, and i am letting the 1st bucket dry now.

Its prolly fine as long as you let it dry out well first. The dung I'm using came from the field so...Anyway, I'm hopin the lime I added will make the difference.

Maybe stick a strip of ph paper down in the poo water after its been pasteurizing for awhile????

Ya...I read that....talking about adding lime to a casing layer.

I think all i can do is try different amounts like you said...

Actually some of the last few trays of dung Ive done are looking better. I pasteurized for a little longer on these and also made sure they werent too wet. Ill make a post in a few days with the progress...thanks for your help!

pH test kits are cheap i'd go grab one of those. Hell digital ones are 25$ some places.

My dung is looking up though....I have rhizomorphic growth goin on in a few trays now.

My problem was that I was pasteurizing a lot at a time and not letting it go long enough. Also, my dung was not dry enough when I put it in the trays.

Im hopin I got this licked...Trays should be done in a few days. I will post results.

ok meat...

The bins I did with the lime suck...i still have them and they are not really going much at all...the lime was not needed...just make sure the dung is NOT HARDLY WET at all before you spawn it...and also i found that past. for about 1.5 hours works better for me too...
