Dung smells pissy?
    #2098631 - 11/12/03 09:11 PM (13 years, 29 days ago)

Pasturized horse manure and cased it today. The thing is it smell a little like horse piss, slight ammonia smell.

Is this going to be a problem?

Thanks

No, it was really dry and broken up when I gathered it. It looked perfect, it just smell a little bit like urine. No shitty smell at all. Maybe it's the straw that smells...

Or maybe the horse took a piss. I mean really, this one is a no brainer. Why are you asking why your horse shit smells like horse piss?

Ammonia is mycelial waste product, but if the straw and dung smelled that way once you got it it was probably horse piss, like strongbad said. Unless that's a new thing....

Could have been a bit composted, too -- this would make it smell like ammonia.

I understand why it would smell like piss... the reason I ask is because I'm concerned the ammonia will kill the colonized corn it was mixed with.

Will this be a problem?

Thanks for your replies.

Its is the ammonia in the dried dung.It needed to be composted to get rid of it because ammonia supplies nitrogen for microbial use.The Mushroom Cultivater by Paul Statments states"the odor of ammonia must be completely gone before it can be spawn"(page 104).The troubleshooting charts on page 226 says that residual ammonia results in spawn growing slowly or not at all.

I'm in agreement with shroomophile with the only exception being that 100% dry dung should contain 0% ammonia. defunkt specifically stated that the dung was "really dry and broken up". This leads me to believe that the pasteurised dung had some contaminant introduced. I can say that any non-earthy, happy, good smell is bad. If you truly suspect ammonia try leaching the dung prior to pasteurisation.

I like the idea of leaching. Note that anywhere in TMC that manure is mentioned (other than as a compost ingredient) he specifically says "leached manure".

Aside from that, drying is often effective at eliminating the amonia, perhaps the middles weren't completely dry?

Fuck it. You've already spawned it. We are just pissing(hehehe, pun), but you will know for sure in a day or three.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

Leaching the dung sounds interesting...

How do you do it?

Thnaks for all your advice.

That I can't be as difinitive about. Although he recomends leached manure, stamets never says anything about exactly what he means or how he does it.

To me, it meant using an excess of water for hotwater pasteurization. The excess water leaches dissolvable/washable stuff out and leaves to bulk of material behind. Leach and pasteurize in one step. I have heard other people say they cold soaked, drained then pasteurized. They referred to this as leaching. Unfortunately, that's about all I know.
