How do you go about starting an auction website?
    #3659431 -

I would like to start a website where students could put their books up for auction and other students can bid on them. The local university makes a butload selling and buying back books.

I'd like to see more of those funds freed up for buying drugs.

Spice this town up a little bit.

Also I'd like to make a buck   :stoned:

You need a domain name, web hosting, and auction software.

Any suggestions as to whom I should get my web hosting and software from?

I like namecheap for domains, and currently the two main web hosts I mess with are HostForWeb and CompleteHostingSolutions (their website seems down for some reason, but my hosted sites are all fine right now).

I don't know of any free auction software, paying me to do it would probably be out of the range I imagine you were planning on spending on this, and the prepackaged auction software I saw just now looking didn't have prices listed, so you know it's not cheap .  You *might* be able to get osCommerce going with some sort of auction module, but no guarantee and I don't have the time to look for you.

Good luck

Hmmm...

Looks like I need to learn Linux, Apache, and PHP.

That ought to keep me busy for a while.

I really just want a shitty little auction site that works.

Actually, I guess I could just do it all manually. People can pay me to list their items. They send me $1 by paypal for every book they want to list, and I put up a listing for it for a certain amount of time.

The only problem there is there will be alot of entries that have sold still listed and such.

ya advanced hosting is the company that i got my name and hosting package off of. in the control panel there are option to install scripts. php auction is one of them. iwouldnt get an account with phpauction. i simply gave you that link to read about the script itself. i just looked at their hosting packages and they are very expensive. 20$ for 50meg storage 500meg bandwidth. that's a horrible price. the package i have (i recently found out that they don't offer it any more sorry) is 2300meg storage 65gig bandwidth

i just installed it go here if you want to see what the default install looks like

So Advanced will install it and manage the software for me?

I won't have to cline anything, or grimp, or splarf, or b.l.o.r.t.t., or whatever?

I just click "install" and it will go.

Can you charge people to list auctions with that software?

you install it but all u have to do is pick a folder and hit install then u can config it by urself. i dont really know much about the software but it looks pretty simple plus if u dont like it within 30 days you can cancel your account and get a refund(they dont refund the name registration ).

Can you charge people to list auctions with that software or is it a free auction site?

Can you find a control panel to set things like listing fee and completed auction fees?

I appreciate you looking into this for me.

You're likely going to end up having to spend *some* money, BH.  If it was that easy everyone would have such auction sites up, wouldn't they?

You can get free message boards (EZboard, et. al.), and yet everyone doesn't have a message board.

I don't mind spending a few bucks. I figure I can get a paying site up for about US$1000 or less.

I might start it as a free auction site for a year or two and then start charging. I could do that for about $40 up front and $20 a month, which is manageable.

I'm an old hand at guerilla marketing, and by causal relation know a few people who own small stores in town that are popular with the hippie crowd.

These are mostly conservative kids who like Bush and shit though, so I'm not sure how well word will spread from there. I guess it depends on how much the liberals hang out with the conservatives and what the actual ratio is.

There already is one kind of. It's set up much like what I was talking about using a message board format.

There is hardly anything there, and some spammers seem to have already found the site. I'm not sure how long it has been around. It may have just gotten started.

I only know about it because I saw it on a little note on an obscure little public billboard just inside the back door of one of the buildings.

I don't understand why they haven't just put a flyer on every car on campus.

I'll probably work on it this summer, and premiere it next Fall which is when the turnip truck drives down main street every year, and all the new students fall off.
