To case or not to case?

I could read all i want about casing and cakes but which do YOU prefer? I wanna get a decent idea of pretty experienced growers and see what they like best. Also, does using perlite and casing work? Any extra things i need to know?

Casing gives better yeilds than just birthing a cake in a terranium, so obviously casing is preffered.
Perlite used for the actual casing? I;m not too sure, probably could be done, but verm is a much better choice... Perlite holds too much moisture, not good for a substrate.Use perlite for the bottom of your terranium to keep it humidified.

hehe.. thats what i meant.. so in order to case, i would...
put a 2 inch layer of perlite on the bottom of the tank.. add water.. add casing.. then add verm?

No, you would...
put a 1 inch layer of perlite in the bottom of your TERRANIUM (which is not where the actuall casing will go into; the casing is made in a different container, such as a tupperware container.) then in the casing container, 2 inch layer of verm on bottom, then 1-2 inch layer of crumbled cakes, then 1/2-1 inch layer of verm on top of the cakes. You then put the cover on (be it plastic wrap or the actual lid) and wait until mycelium starts forming on the top. Now, you place this container INTO your terranium, on top of the perlite...
That's basically what you do. Using just verm. for your casing is the easiet way to case. Click Here to see Hongus's verm. casing tek (a more detailed version of what I just told you...)

richard cranium...
try to get an opaque container for your casing and have light above your containers. this teaches your mushrooms to grow nice and tall. i think both of them would fail miserably at a spelling bee.

Ted: "Hey kids, who does your mom look like in the morning?"

McMan could one put down a 1/2 layer of perlite in the casing tray and then cover it with verm, sub, and 50/50 as usual. would this improve the size of the fruits throughout the flushes due to extra moisture provided for them? also how well would this work and how large should the case be if this were implemented?

There is a tek that suggests this. It's the one I used on my first casing.

Hehe nope, I know how to spell it just fine, but when I type I dont often reallize how I type things and I never check how I spelled something so I am ever able to catch it. I asked him that because he spelled it that way twice. Anyway, I like the word terranium more than terrarium, It's less boring. Lol.
Actually, believe it or not, I spell very well. It's just when I get to a keyboard when I start fucking things up because I type too fast to think about what I am typing. That and I type at night when I am tired and lose coordination and hit the wrong keys (a lot).
In all truth, back in grade school, I spelled so well that I was forced into taking a test to get into T.A.G. simply because of my spelling. I had no fucking clue why I had to take the test, but I knew I didnt get graded for it, so I screwed with the person who was giving the test the entire time, needless to say, I didnt make it into T.A.G. Lol.

Isn't allowing the casing to partially colonize make it act in part as a layer of substrate thereby serving dual functions. As substrate and protector of the sub.
Loads of great info mcman! I'll be ready for that test.

I'd like to try casing, but I don't have any cakes that are ready to be birthed, would it be possible, to use a few cakes that are fruiting right now in my terrarium? As in, I remove all the mushrooms and crumble them up? Or has the exposure to light doomed them to stay?
Shit... If anything is worth doing, it's worth doing right.
