casing recommendations?

Hello all-

It looks like in just a few days about 6-7 of my original 10 pint jars will be ready to case. Cumulus-like billows cover most of them.

Here, I wish to ask for casing advice. I was planning to make a sandwich with 50-50 verm and potting soil on the bottom, mycelium in the middle and pure soil on top.

Is there a better way? I just read somewhere that potting soil in prone to contaminants, and I don't want any of those. I am ready to do what it takes to get results.

Thanks in advance for any help.

i wouldnt use potting soil because there are others, probably more reliable methods....

for the bottom layer, plain vermiculite seems to work juuuuust fiiine...

and add your favorite top dressing as you would normally...
im going right now the coco fiber route, and it seems like a really superior casing layer... excellent water retention, fabulous texture...

Here's a lil somthing mymonkeys been doin for a couple months now:

Using 1/2 inch of manure as top casing layer. Pins like a mo' fo' and fruits the same.

Manure sounds like it would be a great casing but can be tricky. My first casing was straight verm, it was OK but the flushes were small. Then tried Hawks 50/50 verm & peat, "the mycelium eat that shit up...lol". Happy with the sucess of the verm/peat I went on to verm & manure and had alotta trouble with "overlay". I know verm & manure will work but timing is very important along with making sure it doesn't get too much humidity, which was one of my problems being that I had the casing in a chamber with perlite. I just took my verm & manure overlayed casings and turned them upside down put em in new aluminum trays and cased with verm & peat. This was the fastest and produced a great flush, the entire surface was covered with shrooms. I recased last night I will post pics if this turns out the way Im hoping. If this is your first time casing I highly recommend the "verm & peat 50/50". If anyone disagrees I would like to hear their thoughts.

why did you say that!!!? i was wanting to use manure for my casing this time but i ran out of money and had to stick to straight verm = ( oh well

if you have any old equipment that you want to get rid of that you are willing to trade for some new stuff the go here to:
