new to birdseed-how much per casing
    #635744 - 05/18/02 05:54 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

I have 4 1.6 pint spagetti jars each 2/3 full of seed, colonizing nicely. I haven't come across a tek that describes casing birdseed and was wondering: can someone who knows about casing birdseed spawn tell me how many rubbermaid shoeboxes I can case with these 4 jars? They each contain at least a full pint of substrate. THX.

How about 2 jars per shoebox. That sounds good eh?

I had almost resolved to do that, thanks for confirming my inkling. These jars are colonizing quick, I wonder how I'll get into a smooth rotation with four jars and two terrariums each holding only two shoebox bins. Maybe I can refrigerate fully colonized jars when the crunch happens.
Well, pass under that bridge when it floats by, I guess .

Dang, that'd be all four jars for a single casing. Ouch. Guess I'll find out.

Hey, wait a minute, most trays used for growing are only 3"-4" high. Where's the room for the casing material? The shoeboxes are 5" high, so after casing they would be brimming over if I put 3" of substrate or more. You're thinking metric.

First off.....you should be spawning your birdseed with manure.
It will go alot farther......and you will get alot more fruits.

example :
1 Quart jar will spawn 2 casings of horse poo.

You might look into getting larger containers.
I use the large alum bread pans from the grocery store.
there is plenty of room.

If you would like to learn how to spawn horse poo......pm me.
You will get alot more fruits and you will end up saving your birdseed for more casings...and its easy to do!!!

good luck!

Hey Road ,
why don't you post a thread on how to spawn horse poo?
It would be a great help to allot of us that have just moved on
to bird seed. I have 10 pint jars with PESA and 2 with creepers going on now, and I would like to try the horse poo, but would like to use cow poo as I have friend who has cows

"1 Quart jar will spawn 2 casings of horse poo."-Roadkill

Zoicks! A quart jar divided between two trays, even my small ones, would make only a 1" or less layer of substrate. When you suggested 3"-4" were you referring to the casing mix layer? By this rule I should be able to use one of my four 1.6 pints per casing.

Oh, I see, with manure as a casing alot less spawn is required.

as asked for....I will make a post with the Tek later.

here is the horse poo tek :

You want the horse poo to be dried out.
Then you put some in a pillow case.
Tie off the pillow case.
Put it in a big ass pot....put a weight on top of the pillow case to keep it under water.
put purified or mineral water in the pot. (tap water is ok if the quality is good)
get a candy thermometer....you'll need one.
turn the stove on and get it up to 160 to 170 degrees.
make sure by checking the candy thermometer...mine clips onto the pot.
this is called pasturizing. ....don't go over 170 degrees.
do this for 30 to 40 minutes.
after you are done.....let it cool down a little.
then ring the pillow case out into the pot.
after some good ringing out.....throw the pillow case in the sink to drain.
leave in there for a hour or so.
Keep the poo water....you can use that for your water mixtures....for like cakes or grains.....the added nutrients of the poo water is good!
Now that the pillow case is done draining after awhile....open it up and check it.
It should be moist.....not runny.....hand squeeze it out if you have to.
you can wash your hands later if you don't like icky stuff....doesn't bother me.
Get some large alum Bread pans from the store.....they are like 2 for $1.79.
Fill the bread pan with 3" to 4" of the poo.
make sure that the poo is cool...after it is cool.....proceed.

Take a PF cake and put it in a food processor...and hit the start button a few times.
break the cake up into little peices....don't over do it...or you will get putty.
If you don't have a food processor.....break the cake up by hand into small peices.
You can spawn the cake into the poo that is in the bread pan.....mix it up really good....only a 1/2 a cake is needed per pan.
If you want.....you can spawn with Grain, Birseed....etc.
Doesn't have to be a BRF cake.
Cover up the pan with Alum foil after you have mixed in the substrate with the poo.
Take a fork and punch little holes in several places.....like 9 places in the Alum foil on the top.
Stick this in the incubator......and you should see growth in a day or 2.
After you get the whole pan of poo colonized you can case it with a Coco Coir casing or any casing layer you want.....or you can let it fruit in the fruiting chamber without a casing layer. ..casing is better!

This tek was taught to me by Pavlovs Dog.....at his house.
I have his permission to write up his Tek.

Picture of Colonized horse poo with half of a Quart of Rye grain spawned in.
Un Id Floriduh strain.....not cased.

Picture taken with my new Digital Camera!

Hope this helps!!!

I'll never go back to doing cakes after working with horse poo!
