disposal of contaminated jars?
    #363846 - 07/30/01 09:56 PM (22 years, 7 months ago)

My firend is a bit paranoid, she has one contaminated jar with some black, nasty-smelling mold growing, and she wants to know if she should just throw it out?

She doesn't want to keep the jar, so is it safe to just put it in a bag and into the garbage? Is there any chance some garbage man will find it and open it, and die?

I told her to just throw it away, but she seems to not trust me much.

Why waste a good jar? Just dump the contents and clean it.

I also agree with dumping the cakes (keep the jar)

I read a post somewhere though that someone had success with burying his/her contam'd cakes in their backyard, and it eventually fruited! Wheather or not they were 'ok' (or if that was true) I dont know, but if she's up for 5 minutes of labour, tell her to try burying the cake. (i myself have no experience with this though)

I've never had any problems when reusing jars that have been contaminated. As long as you take the right precautions and clean everything out, and then sterilize the jar to death, you have no reason to toss it.

Yepp! Stick some bleach in the jar for a day , then give it a good wash and dry - then the usual pressure cooking...

Ok, my friend did what Chuwie said: she buried the contents in her backyard. She made a hole 4 inches deep, put 2 inches of "good" soil, then 1 inch of the contaminated brf, then 1 inch of the good soil.

She knows this wont reallly work, since a) the jar was contaminated in the first place. and b) the sdoil probably will contaminate it even more!

But the contam wont grow into some huge smelly thing in her backyard, will it? If she see's anything unusual, or smells something funny, she says she will dig it back up and throw it into her neighbours pool...

I take my contaminated jars dump the contents into a separate garbage bag and take the contents of the bag into the woods and bury it under some dirt and leaves. I do this for two reasons. First I'm paranoid about placing a half colonized cake in the garbage because I know the pigs are watching me; well, maybe they're not but it's still better to be safe. Second if you bury the cakes under some dirt and leaves if you come back to that spot a month or so later you might see mushrooms growing. I never eat any of them but it's still cool to stand around and get stoned and look at them.
