Networking help!
    #3631345 - 01/15/05 04:03 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Okay.

I need to find a piece of software that will run on windows98 that will act as a hub between interfaces.

I have a wireless router hooked up to my cable. From that wireless router, I have about 4-5 PC's and laptops sharing usage.

I now have 3 more computers I need to get networked, but they are all using ethernet. They do not have wireless support, and will never have it. That being said, they are all plugged into a switch, and a Windows 98 PC is connected to the switch also. This PC has a wireless interface aswell.

The wireless network is 192.168.1.
And the ethernet network is 192.168.2.

192.168.1.1 being the Wireless router, respectively.
192.168.2.1 being the Windows 98 PC going to bridge the connections.

I dont want to purchase any other equipment.

I am looking for a piece of software that will connect these two networks without using NAT. If i must, i will probably use a nat client, but i do not want the extra load, and i already have the router doing this. Any of these connection sharing programs will only allow the ethernet network to see the wireless network, and then the internet, and not vise versa.

I hope someone understands.

Adelphia Cable
-Cable Modem
-Wireless Router[iface1: 192.168.1.1]
--Win2k[iface1: 192.168.1.101]
--Gentoo Linux[iface1: 192.168.1.102]
--Win95[iface1: 192.168.1.103]
--Win98[iface1: 192.168.1.105] [iface2: 192.168.2.1]
---FreeBSD[iface1: 192.168.2.106]
---Irix[iface1: 192.168.2.107]
---Solaris[iface1: 192.168.2.108]

I need software to run on windows98 that will pass data through 192.168.1.105 to 192.168.2.1 back and forth just like it was physically connected w/ wires.

You don't need a hub you need routing capabilities to route from one subnet (192.168.1.X) and another subnet (192.168.2.x)

I am not even sure that windows 98 can do this! I have found almost nothing that suggests it can be done.

The reason for the "almost" is that There may be a route command on 98 but it will be a temporary route that will be lost on the first reboot.

The better choice (IMHO) would be to use Linux, FreeBSD, Irix, Or Solaris. All of them have routing capabilities. Seeing as the WLan card would not work in the Irix or Solaris box you would need to choose the Linux of the FreeBSD box.

Fucking install *n?x already and be done with it. You'll have it routing in the hour. :/

There are third-party programs you can get to do what you're trying to as well, but win98 isn't the best router OS.
