When to birth
    #353149 - 07/03/01 12:12 AM (23 years, 2 months ago)

Stupid question, but I've seen a lot of different opinions. When should I birth my cakes? When I see 100% colonization or should I wait longer?

Thanks everyone!

You should wait until you see pins. Anything from 1 to 3 weeks.
On seldom occasions pins don?t appear in the jar, then birth the cake so it pins in the terrarium.

It really depends on what strain you're growing, and your growing method. If you're using the MMGG or the PF Tek, you can wait until pinheads appear. If you're going to case, you can birth the cakes after they are 100% colonized.

I usually wait a few days beyond when the surface is 100% colonized, just in case there are any uncolonized areas within the jar. But if you wait for pins you may be waiting forever -- I haven't had a single jar so far which has pinned until I either cased it or birthed it. Pins ensure quick fruiting, though; I'd wait a week or so for pins and if they don't appear, just birth the jars anyway.

Wait about 5 days after visual 100% colonisation. If U want to case, I would kept the jars in the dark during all the time they colonise. If it's for a cake, U can birth it after 100% visual colonisation, I doens't matters as much, because whenU crumble a cake for casing, if there is a non-colonised bit in the cake, it's generaly a place for contaminats to arrive, unless U have STERILE conditions when doing the casing ( oven tek + gloves+ dust mask+ hat), which is a bit anoying; better wait until really sure everuthing is colonised
