Computer Problems

I have posted this in the S&T Forum, but i think it would do be here  :crazy:

My computer doesnt want to boot up, the power comes on but nothing loads. i firstly put this down to the hard drive but i put i fully working one in there and the problem still persists, i am now thinking i have a problem with my RAM or motherboard?

Any suggestions welcome..

Did this just start happening out of nowhere, or was it after an upgrade or something?
Does anything come on the screen at all? Does the computer beep at all?

As far as i know, this started happening out of no where, nothing comes up on the screen and computer does not beep. If i keep turning the computer on and off for 10-20 minutes it will decide to boot.

Any problems at all when you can get it to boot?

Do you know what kind of motherboard you have? Take a look at the power supply, which is where the power cable connects, and see if there's a wattage (a number, probably something like 250W).

It sounds like something is probably messed up with the motherboard, but it could be the power supply as well.

Sometimes, when it starts booting up, it will get to the log on screen and then cut out and im left with the blank screen again. Its a 300W power supply with a 1.6 AMD and a ASRock motherboard.

Try this if you know how: disconnect the IDE and power cable from the hard drive, and try booting it up. See if it goes to a blank screen again, or if it freezes saying "Disk Failure" or something like that.

I did what you said, i disconnected the hard drive (removed both cables) turned the system on and was just left with the blank screen.

Sounds like there's something seriously fucked with your motherboard then. If you feel comfortable taking your PC apart, I'd try switching the power supply or something as well, making sure all the connections are solid and whatnot. You might need to get a new motherboard though.

OK, thanks for the help, could the RAM be the problem? I just want to make sure for definite what the problem is, before i go buy a whole new motherboard :smile:

It could possibly be RAM related, what I'd do is take the whole thing apart, and try booting it with just the video card and some RAM, and try switching the RAM and stuff as well, that should narrow things down.

have you tried resetting the CMOS jumper?

could your CMOS battery be dead and needs to be replaced?

are you overclocking the cpu?

Whats your cpu temperature? I was having similar problems the other day and it turned out my cpu was running as high as 80C (170F) due to the heatsink and fan being clogged up with dust.

I had this problem a few years ago with one of my laptops. It was a scorch on the motherboard. Luckily it was still under warranty and Dell repaired it free of charge. Anyways, just wanted to offer another possible scenario as to what the problem might be.

I posted a little bit about troubleshooting in response to this question in the S&T forum. I tend to agree with funkymonk on this one. A client of mine had constant problems with her PC and replaced nearly everything in the box but she still had to keep pressing the button over and over to turn it on. It would try to boot and then fail, every 20th time it booted, then in windows the drives didn't work properly. I heard this and brought over a power supply and everything returned to normal. Now this is only one possible solution, it could be static buildup, it could be a loose connection somewhere, or even a malfunctioning expansion card. I would NOT buy a new motherboard or replace the computer just yet. It's probably something with a simple fix.

After the people in this forum inspired me to take my computer apart, i did lol, after replacing everything but the power supply i found that my proccesor was the problem, i have replaced it with my old 750mhz, and the systems workin fine now, thanks the help all, if it wasent for all those suggestions and ideas id still be sittin here scratchin my head wondering what the problem is lol
