anyone here good with computers?
    #3026062 - 08/19/04 09:57 PM (19 years, 7 months ago)

Im pretty experienced when it comes to computers. A while ago I had the problem of when i'd click on a windows media file to open it, it would come up and say windows cannot find wmplayer.exe. I went into the folder options and went under file types to check the path of the windows media player shortcuts, and everything was just fine. I fixed the problem by downloading wmp 9 from microsoft.com. Well now I have the problem of when I go under start, run and type in msconfig, it comes up with cannot find msconfig. I know its there because I find it when I do a file search. It finds msconfig in C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries. Anyone know what to do to fix this? Mabe restore the registry to an earlier date?

Yes, I'd try that. I'm sorry but that's about all the advice I know.. :frown: I've never heard of that happening, although nothing Windows does is surprising to me anymore.

i think msconfig should be in the windows directory ( or system/system32 subdirectory)... im using win2k, and dont have a msconfig, so i cant tell you the correct location... i'd do an antivirus, because it seems as though your files are bieng moved around (or dont let any idiots use your computer)

you got yourself some spyware that killed your WMP; it may be causing other problems.

Try restoring to an earlier time if that doesn't work, update your adaware and antivirus then boot into safe mode and scan.

Also try going to your task manager and see if you have any suspicious processes running, if you do, try a google search and see what it pulls up.

check that your registry looks like this...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE

(Default) "C:\\WINDOWS\\PCHealth\\HelpCtr\\Binaries\\MSConfig.exe"

im like 90% sure this is what your problem is. (msconfig.exe probably isnt in the APP PATHS folder) check my next post for how to add

also, you can add your own keys in the app paths folder so that RUN will open whatever program you want when you type in "xxxxx" or whatever.

just make a new key in the "App Paths" folder called "xxxx.exe" with xxxxx being whatever you wanna type. then double click on the default entry on the right and change the VALUE to the whole pathname for the executable. (for instance C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe)

Ok. I did what you said. I added that key into the registry, but..........it still doesnt work. I even tried copying msconfig and putting it into a different folder and changing the path to that folder, but it still didnt work. I did a search again and I found this file in MSCONFIG.EXE-1EF1EA0F.pf in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch. Is this supposed to be here? I had the same problem earlier with windows not being able to find msconfig before i totally restored. I guess its not that of a big deal because I can just open it by clicking on the icon.
I know I dont have spyware or a virus because I restored windows xp a few days ago. I made sure i didnt download kazaa or bearshare or any other p2p programs plus i have had norton antivirus, personal firewall, the router, and windows xp enabled firewall constantly running. Oh well.

I used to (still do) build and install computers for the general consumer and airplains and boats.

And I have to agree with mndfreeze, it would be wise to just reinstall Windows. msconfig not beeing found is a good indication that there is something very wrong in your system.

Did you run any registry fix programs, or tweak programs? Those programs can cause these types of things.

well then, I'm not sure what the problem is... In case you weren't too sure about editing the registry yourself, download this and run it to add it to the registry the correct way. be sure that msconfig.exe is still in that folder you specified in the first post. You mentioned moving it around... It is supposed to be there.

https://webspace.utexas.edu/jss56/upload/a.reg

and if this doesn't work, then the problem is rather serious.. something is actively preventing msconfig from running for some reason.

Sounds like a virus. There are more than one that disable msconfig. If you do not own a currently up to date virus scanning program try this site.
