Cacti cutting info please..
    #3497674 - 12/14/04 02:12 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I have this middle cutting of mister Pedro that was cut this summer, put wasn't really potted when dried... Roots have slowly started to pop up from the base (well, the bottom side), and I potted him just now, half way in 1/4 sand 3/4 potting soil.. It's winter, not much sun... My question is, should I leave him next to the window, or should I put him under fluo's for the winter so he can have nice&grown roots for spring time? I know it's not a good idea to give unrooted cutting plently of light, but would 3x25W fluo's be ok for him? Thanx for advice...

Halfway in is too much, you only need to plant logs deep enough so they can stand up. Also direct sunlight is fine, you said roots have already appeared I'd put the cutting next to a window recieving direct sun.

Hum, it's halfway in, but is quite short, so halfways is just enough for it to stand without any problems... it's about 20cm long, I first planted it sideways, and the roots grew very longly, it ways in a very sandy substrat... It doesn't get that much sunlight... anyways I'll leave it next to the window for a few weeks and then start the fluos to see if any pups would pop up... good idea? Or should I just leave him there and wait better days to take outside?...
P.S the roots are about half a cm, quite short.

Give it 2 weeks or so to grow some larger roots then you should be able to throw it under some floros or on south facing window. Keep the soil dry but foiliar feed with full strenght ferts at night. This should help it throws out more pups and quicker without weting the soil so the roots grow better and theres minimal chance of rot.

mine is leaning against a wall, and soon (i hope) it'll be standing up with its own root support.
its sitting 2.5 inches deep in coir, sand, and perlite to get it rooted.
after the nodes show up, i'll plant it a little deeper in cactus soil.

Yes mist the plant with some ferts and it will soak into the skin. The benifit is you dont get the soil wet so there's no chance of rot. And the roots grow more in search of water when the soil is dry, but not bone dry.
