but just know that its a stupid thing to do. As much as i support our troops i support the Iraqi's more. If someone started a pre emptive war with my country to "spread freedom", i would fight back too.
If you go over there, and get yourself killed its nobodys fault but your own, and i comend the Iraqi who did it, for defending his country well.

Edit- Please don't, your a really cool chick (aside from your politics), and i don't want you to make yourself, or anyone else dead over some Oil & weapons contracts.

Desiree,
I don't have a problem with your politics, but from personal experience most of the people I know in the military do not like it all. THAT IS, except for my freinds in the officers corp. The guys I know who went through the Naval and Airforce Academy dig it, but not the enlisteds. I think the rule is, everybody but gung-hos and psychos hate the military unless they feel they are making a positive change, or they are officers.

First let me say that it's not about the money.
I make enough money to take care of me and my kids.
Bi0: your being a dick in making those comments, we've spoken before and I know that your a decent guy...so stop being an ass.
My kids are my priority and I'm thinking about a future for all of us.
I don't ever discuss political issues on these boards because I f**king suck at debate and discussion. I have private and personal reasons for all choices I decide to make. This is something I was considering years ago. Never could then because of reasons I won't go into. Right now, I feel that I need to make the choice soon before I am no longer able to join and because of the specific things I believe in...I want to back my beliefs up.
Again, I don't discuss this type of thing online, especially on this board because I know how heinous people can get and I'm so awful when it comes to backing myself up to a bunch of people who have good points but won't convince me to change my mind.
This issue was discussed in private with Tasty Smurf House in which he so happily made public, but oh well, out in the open now.
I don't care how others think about this reply. Call me weak for not backing up my beliefs online to all of you but that is how I am. I'm not ashamed for voting for Bush as I'm not ashamed for wanting to be part of something that has changed so many lives. Maybe I am being selfish, but that is for me to care about. I appreciate everyones input and will gladly listen to whatever anyone has to say on the matter. It's my life , my choice and that IS all I will say about that.
thank you

Desiree

I'd disagree seeing how you'd be dying for nothing. Feel bad for the soldiers.

Why does this thread exist if you aren't going to engage us any further? Feel free to PM me about it, I love honest debate, I won't just bash you for wanting to join the military or voting for Bush, I'm interested in knowing your reasons.

Hi my Desi-girl!!

I also like to avoid politics for the most part on this board.  So anyway, won't get into that.  Most people probably already know where I stand.

That said, I have often considered going into the military, particularly when times get tough financially.  When I was a teenager there was a period where I was determined to be in the navy. (my family has a long navy tradition.) Sometimes I want to go simply for the life experience.  Sometimes I want to go because of other personal issues I have.

No matter what girl, you have to follow your heart.  Open yourself to that inner voice and listen to what it has to say.  It seems too easy to say "do what makes you happy," but it's true.  I won't even bring up the kids issue, as I'm sure that you've already considered and thought about that.

If it were me, I'd probably take some mushrooms and think about it.  As it is, my own morality won't permit me to enlist, but I can't and won't say that nobody should.  Everyone has their own life to live, a purpose to fulfill.

So this reply isn't really about what you should do Desiree, since I think that the only thing you should do right now is to take some time to meditate/think/pray on it, to determine if the military is where you are being led in your life.

Let us know though, what you decide!  Don't just disappear on us.

Enlist and take a trip to Iraq and you might not have a future of your own nor your children to have a future that includes you.
Patriotism is a beautiful thing as long as that that you choose to be a patriot for is worthy. Ask any of the family members of the 50,000 americans that died in Viet Nam if their loss of life in a war that was lost was worth it. And anytime you choose to contemplate the validity of that war ask yourself this; you go to war, kill the enemy, then find out it wasn't just killing but murder for the reason of this war was unjustified and the enemy was imaginary or even one that you created yourself for political reasons. If you were a natural born killer then this probably wouldn't matter. But, to those of us that have the ability to reason this would be an eternal nightmare. Viet Nam sucked for everyone involved except the opium industry and the weapons manufacturers. If that was bad wait til the truth surfaces about Iraq. At least in Viet Nam our soldiers had been attacked before we decided to take an active roll in killing hungry, often innocent people. So, of course we need an army but...........I certainly wouldn't want to be a member of one under the control of a ruthless dictator.

I have been flirting with the idea of joining the military. I'm not a penniless eighteen year old kid with nothing to do who is looking to sign up. I am twenty-five and I consider myself to be mature(I act like I am forty most of the time). I don't need the money(I am financially well off and self-sufficient). I would be doing it for the following reasons:

50% - I want to do something. I am sick of sitting behind a damn desk(which is all I have done for the past five years).

25% - I want to help out my fellow Americans who are getting blown up by roadside bombs and shot by snipers.

25% - I think that maybe the military could give me a good "kick in the ass" and bring about some positive changes in my mind and general outlook.

After reading some military diaries, I am no longer convinced that the military would be what is best for me. I read a lot about the enlistees being treated like children, most of the enlistees acting like children, and the whole experience being an unenjoyable chore.

I have no problem with being told what to do by an experienced superior who knows what he is doing, deserves to be listened to, and treats me with respect. Strangely enough, I am not scared at all of combat(although I'm sure that would change once a bullet whizzed past my head). The thought of violence and battle does not elicit any fear at all in me.

But, the thought of being treated like a child, being amongst immature young people, and not having any freedom does bother the hell out of me. I don't think I would be able to deal with that. Maybe when I was a snot-nosed eighteen year old smartass it would have been good for me. But, at this stage in my life, I don't think it would be good for me.

I'm sorry, but does the thought of killing Innocent Iraqi's not bother anyone?
Do you really think we have any right to be over there? If you think that you'll be fighting nothing but Saddam's secret police, and bathists you are wrong. More insurgents are picking up weapons every day in retribution for their houses, places of worship, and hospitals being bombed.
The enemy doesn't wear uniforms. You'll be fighting in the city's, not knowing who is a civilian, and who is your enemy.
Our military is slowly getting more comfortable with torture, physical, psychological, and sexual abuse.
If you get captured, do you think your treatment will be any better? After Abu Graib, how could you expect it to be?

but hey, if none of this bothers you, and you want to fight Bush's little war go ahead, by all means, stand up for what you believe in.

one question, who will be there for your kids when you die?
are you willing to let your childrn grow up without you?
Are you ready to die alone teens of thousands of miles from home?
Are you willing to sacrifice your life for your beliefs?
Is there any posibility that you are wrong in what you believe in?
have you ever looked back on past beliefs of yours and wondered what you were thinking?
these are questions to think very hard about before you make any choices. i only respond because i care.

In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. Yeah, this is a decision that will effect you, your family, and your friends for the rest of all your lives, you really need to think it through. Don't do anything about it for a few months, preferably longer. People go through phases like this, and then realize they fucked up big time. If you still want to join in a few months, then start looking into it. Personally I think it's a horrible idea, but it's your life not mine........
