Is it that bad?

I've been considering the army for a long time. I haven't checked into it much and I'm unsure about the age cut off to enlist.

I don't feel like I have to explain my reasons for wanting to enlist in the army but the possibility is there. I'm very interested in doing this....for my future and the future of my children.

This is going on in OTD if anyone is interested in reading up on it.

Someone disagrees...as do many. I'm not asking for advise on the matter...maybe just opinions. If anyone is wondering, I voted for Bush.

I'm not giving advise here, as you stated you didn't want any. The following are just my opinions as I was prior enlisted in the Marine Corps.

I hated every minute of it. If you don't mind curfues, and being treated like a 15 yr old for 4 years then go for it. If you enjoy being bossed around by a power tripping 19 yr old kid strait out of high school just because he enlisted a year before you did then go for it.

I know this doesn't sound too bad but if you do decide to enlist you will remember this post, I gaurantee it. Life in the military is something you just have to experience before you can really understand. I had a friend try to talk me out of it because he had previously been in the marines but everything he told me didn't sound that bad at the time.

Your overall quality of life really is that bad. You're technically 'at work' 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for 4 straight years. You live in a barracks and can (and will) be called upon to do all manner of stupid shit even after normal working hours and on your days off without any regard to any plans you may have had. This may sound like whining to some but this is a common and almost daily occurance. Maybe some units are different and maybe the army is a lot different from the marines but I doubt it.

This post is getting quite long so I'll stop here. I've only covered your overall quality of life in this post but there are many other aspects of military service that I have a distaste for. If you wish to know more send me a PM and I'll reply with whatever questions you might have about my first hand experience. Btw, yes, I was in Iraq and strange as it may sound it wasn't that bad in comparison. In fact if they call me back I will request to be transfered to a deploying unit rather than live on base with the daily military routine bullshit. I guess the military lifestyle is for some people but not for others and it certainly isn't for me.

If you want us to discuss it with you you'd have to tell us your reasons for joining. Money? The good of the U.S.? Kill some Arabs? Get power? If you just say, I'm joining the army, well, good luck on that, but whatever reason you have doesn't seem good enough to make such a (in my opinion) horrible decision

Tell us how it is if you decide to do it. Remember also, you give up many of your freedoms when you join the army. Your life will lose most senses of privacy, and you will be under the control of others. Have fun

Do whatever you feel you have to do. I'm personally against this war and would never personally want to go, but I'm not gonna tell what's right or wrong. I'd like to mention that not all the military is in Iraq. I have a friend in the Navy right now who's stationed somewhere on the East Coast, and another friend in the Air Force who's stationed in South Korea. Then there are those in Afghanistan, as well.

Silversoul gave the best advice. do what you feel you should do.

I personally would say not in a time of war. if you have a two year degree join the peace corps.

For the moment, at least, the military has a policy of not allowing women in combat, so I'd say the chances of her getting killed aren't all that high.
