Either way, it doesn't matter. Even if they do, it is probably only volunteer position. A women would most likely be assigned to a non-combatant position.

While I was in Iraq there was a woman who was there with some of the Army SF guys. She went out on some of the raids with them and was just as much a hard ass as any of them. I was on post at the front gate a few times when I saw them going out and coming back in the hummers and she was often manning the roof mounted .50cal. I'm sure it was probably a position she volunteered for though.

what are your reasons for wanting to join? i'm not going to tell you what to do or not to do, but i have a feeling your kids would rather have you home with them. are you doing it for the money? or are you marching off to join the noble cause of "spreading freedom and democracy to the world"?  cause that's just a fancy term for imperialism, just so you know. :smirk:

If I wasn't going to college, I would join for the physical challenge, training, self discipline, and money. I'm sure I would fucking hate it and probably cry myself to sleep many nights, but I think it would offer me power to live my life more effeciently in the long run providing I didn't get killed or maimed.

I feel like I'm too lazy to make anything of myself unless I'm being ordered and have no choice. It's a huge character flaw and I hope I can right it on my own in time.

However, it's a huge decision and I think you should sleep on it for many nights. I hear they can keep you for up to 8 years in time of war.

I was a weekend warrior (national guard) for 6 yrs, I joined right out of high school, it was a good experience at the time, but after the first three years I wished it would end, I got tired of somebody telling me what I could and could not do, they pretty much own you once you sign your contract, and not to mention the dead shows I had to miss because of it!

jeez man, you always seem to zero in on one little aspect of a post while missing the whole picture. Perhaps her chances of dying in combat are low (although not non-existent), but the chances of her being a poor, derelict mother for ditching her kids to go on her personal GI Jane adventure is extremely high.

My father was never around when I was a child - it fucked us up for many years. I am positive others have gone through this as well.

I think this chick is totally selfish to want to join the military & ditch her kids for such a long period of time. As a mother, her number one priority is be a nurturing mother, not a distant mother.

There are many avenues for bettering one's life. In the case of a young mother with young children, joining the military is one option that is too late for her and just too damaging for her kids. If she needs money for college she should look into grants and student loans like everyone else.

I'm sorry to say but the joining the military will not give you any more ambition than you have right now. It is not some magic program that will train you to be a better person. I had this same character flaw going into the military and I still have it today, a year after getting out. Don't fall for that bullshit recruitment tactic. They tell you they will build you up, and make you into something better. This is a lie. It is human nature to want to better ourselves and the recruiters are aware of this. They employ this tactic and tell you that the military will instill certain character traits in you. This simply isn't true. Nobody can force you to change. It is a decision that you must conciously make yourself. You have to decide to be different and then make it happen. No amount of having a drill instructor yell at you is going to change this. I speak from first hand experiences. If this is your reason for wanting to join then I beg you not to waste your time. Oh, and yes they can keep your for 8 years during war time. I have 3 more years in which they can call me back to active duty. I feel that I wasted 4 years of my life and now that I'm just getting my life going, if they called me back I would do everything in my power not to go.

Well, if thats what you wana do than go do it, it'll keep the rest of us from getting drafted for alittle while longer.
but just know that its a stupid thing to do. As much as i support our troops i support the Iraqi's more. If someone started a pre emptive war with my country to "spread freedom", i would fight back too.
If you go over there, and get yourself killed its nobodys fault but your own, and i comend the Iraqi who did it, for defending his country well.

Edit- Please don't, your a really cool chick (aside from your politics), and i don't want you to make yourself, or anyone else dead over some Oil & weapons contracts.

It's a horrible idea, once in the military, you lose all your rights. You know how they are treatingthe soldiers, making them stay over in Iraq way after they were supposed to go home, not letting soldiers retire, recalling retired soldiers...... You need to think long and hard about this before you come to a decision, because once you're in, you are theirs, for as long as they want/need you, and this could be a long fucking time, longer than you can ever imagine. Good luck with everything.

anyway i was in Dutch military and it sucked in the beginning I liked it, going to bars with others, drinking and smoking, practising with different guns. But after a while (month or 2 lol) I felt locked up.

And I was locked up, once for being too late. That did it, I searched help and could "escape"...

Smoking a big fat joint in a tank during a break was ok though. But now the Dutch army is in Iraq as well, cause our pres. is in Bushes ass. (what a pervert but well, he is my leader lol)

A war I dont suppor t at all, actually I aint supporting any war. I can support defense, but if arab countries por palestines defend themselves thats called terrorism.

When the west is fighting far away from home they are liberating a country by occupieng it and killing their inhabitants...

blame blame bah bah

desiree dont, there is more then money, the reason you voted for the devil bush if i remind correct. and now you are leaving ur kids for that? Walk the way of ur heart if thats in the army...*couch* then so be it!

If it is money, there are plenty of programs to get money to feed and clothe your children. Maybe not in your state, but they do exist. I believe one is called W.I.C. (woman, infant, child). WIC in particular is one that you can collect without ever having to pay back. I know if you recieve Temporary Assistance, they may require you to pay it back depending on how long you collect it (maximum of 60 months).

If its not money, and you want to do a public service, become a worker at a state park. You will get the money, the benefits, and you wouldnt carry a gun. Plus, you would see some cool shit hanging out guiding people arround.

this whole post could be 'a swing and a miss'.
