Do you cold shock your cakes or not?

my first 5 cakes, i let them colonize until they started pinning, then i threw them in the friting chamber. after the first flush, i dunked them and cold shocked them and so far im getting better results.

so my questions is, should i dunk them and cold shock them before the first flush?

When you're a mushroom cold shocking tells you "HEY, WINTER IS COMING, OH SHIT, WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE, WE BETTER GROW UP AND REPRODUCE!"

IMO not cold shocking is stupid if you have any interest in your pinset.

Ok so i birthed my first cake yesterday and placed it in the fruiting chamber. Is it to late to dunk/roll? If not let me know and i will do it ASAP. thanks in advance!!

You should not be waiting to see pins before birthing..thats why you got better results the second time. It will take forever without fresh air exchange..this is a pinning trigger to use along with light and temp drop. Birth them a few days after the outside is fully colonized and dunk and cold shock at the same time.

Just dunk in cold water overnight? Any other ingredients? Throw em in the fridge? Thanks

Thats it..add a bit of h202 if you have some (like 10:1 but only takes a splash). Once dunked tomorrow, roll in DRY verm (sticks better), then spray wet and fruit.

just to clarify...

water + a splash of h2o2. put cake into jar and fill with water. put a ball of aluminum foil on top of the cake (to keep the cake down) and close the lid. put into the fridge overnight-24 hours. then take it out and roll it in dry verm. lightly spray the verm down and put into fruiting chamber.

you could also look at double-end casing...

Alright so i sterilzed (alchohol/lysol) then removed the cake from the chamber (it smelled oh so sweet), looked great just a little bit of white fuzzy looking patch on the bottom?? I poured some COLD spring water out of a jug in my fridge added the cake upside down and placed a shot glass on top to weight it down splashed with a little hydrogen peroxide and put in the fridge!! Thats it for now tomorrow i roll and set. Thanks

Fuzzy is fine as long as its white. It may turn bluish and or yellowish. Those three colors are ok (generally speaking on the last two..especially once colonized) but anything else is back.

I sure hope you closed the lid on the cake..the fridge is a horribly dirty place and you need the lid on to help keep it clean. At least covered with foil or plastic wrap or something..

i actually put my jars in a freezer bag before they go in my fridge... that place is scary some times...

Just put the container in a lysol sprayed plastic bag. My fridge is especially dirty should i put it outside i live in chicago and its 39 degrees out?

Outside isnt much better..a sealed bag should be ok..lysol isnt good to use around mycelium though..it can cause mutations.

Thanks for the heads up i constantly spray it in the air and in my work space to make sure things are sterile will have to stop that asap.  Thanks. :blush:

I will definitely be using the dunk 'n' roll tek on my first grow. I'm gonna just see if I can fill the jars they are in already up with bottled water and just screw lid back on. Anyone see any problems with that. What can i put in the jar that will hold the cake down?

Dont worry about hold ing the cake down..fill it up all the way and all by maybe a mm will be submerged. And you can definatly do it in the jar..thats where most do it..fill with water..add a splash of h202..MAKE SURE YOU COVER..into fridge then roll ect ect.

Ive heard a balled up peice of tin foil between cake and lid works though.

Where P. cubensis naturally thrives there is no real winter....

I don't cold shock anymore, at least not with P. cubensis or Panaeolus cyanescens.
