Help me pick a topic for my paper

I need help picking a topic for my term paper. The class is Sociology of the Third World, so anything having to do with the third world and our relations with it would help. General topics might include poverty, foreign aid, terrorism, globalization, nation-building, resistance movements, etc. Whatever I choose, the paper needs to be 8-10 pages, so I need something that's broad enough to write that much, but not so broad that it could cover a whole book.

Is this that paper you wrote of in the Mental Health forum? The one that you have not started and that is due in several days?
I'd say that once you pick a topic...it's time to get a couple of books and copy word for word out of them. Plagarism saved my college ass on a few occassions when I had too much going on and was unable to write a real paper.
There are also some sites on the internet that sell term papers.

Aside from the fact that my ethics won't allow it, it usually takes me longer to copy things word-for-word than it does to write legitimate essays.

I like the Columbia idea. I think I might write about the cocaine trade and the way it's affected US-Columbian relations and politics.

Sure thing. I'm not sure if I'll want to write just about Columbia, or if I want to make it broader and talk about Drug War interventionism in general. Either way, I'll be sure to let you guys read it.

That might be good, but I probably won't need it. My school has this online database of scholarly journals I can search, so sources should be pretty easy.

I saw a story on PBS about a country that imported huge amounts of used clothes from other countries, I think in particular the US. People would scavenged through whats brought out and sell them. Anyhow I guess its also putting local cotton farmers and sewing mills out of business, and people can only afford the used clothes anymore.
If thats not 8 pages, I don't know what is.

How about the subsidised rice situation in Haiti?
There's lots of info about it in the thread 'surely all believe this is wrong'...
looks like you got a paper half written already.

Well you could write about foreign aid, the perpetuation of dependance and how the West merrily supplies arms and puts up trade embargo's and effectively squeezes third world countries dry.
The third World has a large workforce, who work, and yet their countries get poorer while we get richer. Hmm.. a link, perhaps?

I'd say write about different opinions on "free trade" (FTAA, specifically, but the concept in general) and its effect on Latin America. Maybe present the economic point of view (ie opening borders create free markets, free markets create better/cheaper products, plus MNCs develop the 3rd world), the local-companies point of view (local businesses can't compete with MNCs with infinite capital at their disposal, so they want to pursue closed-border policies, or internal free-trade zones without allowing US and other "rich" companies from coming in), the local peoples point of view (the "development" rarely benefits local populations, profits are never even seen by them, etc). Also the way that WTO/World Bank/IMF use "structural adjustment policies" to pursue their agenda of "free trade." Also the current-news of , for example, the new gov't in Uruguay, Lula's policies in Brazil, the overthrow of the (now former) president of Bolivia, all that's going on in Venezuela, etc etc etc...
Anyway, that's what I'd write about. That or the emergence of a mono-culture in food/crops due to corporate dominance of int'l markets, and how this is directly effecting farmers in the 3rd world. (for example, there are tons of farmers in India who have started commiting suicide, as a form of protest)

How many is a ton of farmers? In America it might just be 8 or 10, In India, though, it could easily be twenty, and that would be a real problem.

Guys, I've already got my topic. I'm doing kadakuda's idea about the cocaine industry and US interventionism in Colombia. I'm already about 3/4 of the way through.
