incubation...
    #3458707 - 12/07/04 09:04 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I am doing a small pf tek for my first attempt today. I know the concepts of tnt and pmp. The pf tek says to just put them somewhere safe (low temps not a prob.)
I probably will follow the tek, unless someone can  key me in on a better system (within my means, remember, this is my first attempt)

:peace:

tub in tub is the best, but putting them somewhere over 70f and dark will work just fine

The problem colonising at room temperature is the extra time it takes gives more chance of something nasty growing that you dont want there.

What I did for my first attempt, with very little equipment, was I put them in a box on top of the cable box. Though I've bought a heat pad now, they're not particularly expensive but I really don't use it for incubation because just bunging them on top of the cable box works so well lol.
Really anywhere thats slightly warmer than the surrounding environment will help. On top of the fridge is usually warm and other various electrical appliances. Get a cheap thermometer and test it out first though, you don't want them getting too toasty.

Best of luck.

If you have easy access to your hot water heater its warm around it. Like Hambo said check it with a thermometer to make sure it doesn't get over 86 degrees F. GL.

Yeah the myc. probably can take it, but the jars may dry out in the upper 90's.

Plus any deviation from optimal temp. is going to slow mycelial growth.

when i started, all i had was a heating pad to use. if you put them in direct contact with the heating pad, you're going to dry them out and get them too hot.

what you want to do is put them in a box (rubbermaid, shoebox) and put a small towel down in the bottom of it. then another between the box and heating pad. this will spread the heat out just a bit more.

keep a thermometer on the bottom as well as on top of your jars. there's always going to be a difference between the two, but try to keep them in the good range (82-85 is ideal). if it's too cold, try a CLEAN blanket over the top, too hot... crack the lid. it's really a hit or miss until you figure out what consistantly works for you.

hope this helped!

PS - props to hambo on the good info! where have you been hambo?

I started my very first PF Tek last night. Let the jars cool overnight then inoculated this morn. My incubator consists of my snakes old tank (she grew out of it) and a heating pad underneath sitting in my pantry. Hope it works well.

Sounds like a good plan, I would get a thermometer if you don't already have one to keep it as close to 86 degees F as possible. Good luck WoodsCall on your project.

Edit: you already have a themometer, my bad.

put the thermometer in there with the jars, not on the lid! you're not wanting the lid at 86 degrees, but the air inside just a bit lower than 86 because when the myc grows, it'll put off just a bit of heat and be slightly warmer inside the jar.

do you have anything keeping the jar off of the bottom? put a towel down or something... just separate it from that direct heat through the bottom.

my snake's tank had a removable wire mesh lid that i sat on the carpet in my pantry as a platform, then the heating pad, hand towel, incubator, and finally bath towel over lid that i purchased.  the thermometer is attached to the inside   the temp appears to be steady at 82.

k3y

I have actually been setting up ahead of time, as in, I am boiling now, so my jars can sit barren for a few days, so any nasties will jump up (I don't even have a slide for my microscope yet).
The jars will sit in the same constant envirornment.
I am even  experimenting with my fruiting environment.
But  now, since i went back to using perlite, I am teetering on the 3 liter bottle theory again.?. 'cuz i'm goin small. We'll see how that experiment turns out.
BTW,this is just a "feeler" run for me.
Once i get the feel for what i'm doin', color me gone...
