Malted Barley as substrate!

When someone could obtain this for free, like 20 pound, could this be used for cubies? Only thing is, no steeping is possible because that would rinse out to many starch. I will give it a try and post results. I will try out same ratio as I do with rye, and try some variances for correct water content.

If you don't want to lose nutrients through steeping, I suggest using a vaccuum to hydrate your grain. Just measure an amount of water in the neighborhood of the appropriate amount and shake periodically. At some point, there will be no more absorbtion and, hopefully, an evenly hydrated substrate. The downside is acquiring the evacuation equipment if you don't have it already. And the shit will germinate overnight if you don't sterilize it promptly after hydration. *germination experience only with unmanipulated materials. I don't figure that will be a problem with malted grain. This excerpt and all characters contained within are entirely fictional...
