Blind's in, so check or call?
    #3422503 - 11/29/04 11:44 AM (12 years, 14 days ago)

If you had a choice between receiving nothing, $100,000 dollars, or $1,000,000 dollars...which would you choose? Options A and B are guaranteed, but option C is awarded only with the successful flip of a card.
"We are who we choose to be, Spiderman...now choose!"
You may choose only one
A. Nada.
B. An easy $100K.
C. Livin' on the edge...

I figure the sure bet is a gift from God.

Is it the ego which leans more towards risk because its threshold for satisfaction is higher? Higher standards usually corresponds to a more solid ego. So finding contentment seems like an action of submission...the act of a more permeable ego. Any comments or criticism for this poll?

How difficult would it be to flip a card? Since I'm not a moron, I'll take option C.

Not a moron, but maybe a smart-ass?  :smirk:

I know I could have phrased option C differently, but I figured most folks would understand my point.  I guess there's always an exception...

BTW, you pulled a 3 of spades on the river and it did nothing for your pocket Jacks.  You lost the bet

There's a difference between someone not understanding one's point, and understanding one's point but winning $1,000,000 by the fact that they did not convey their idea correctly.

In other words, I was joking, lighten up. :smirk:

with 100k i could buy alot of crack. i don't think a million dollars worth of crack would improve my life much more than 100k worth, so i voted for the 100k.

I'd take the 100k because if invested properly it could be turned into one million in a few years.

This is truly a simple mathematical problem. You take all of the possible roads to conclusion and average the win amount for each path.

A: $0

B: $100,000

C: $500,000

Anyone choosing B is not very intelligent.

yeah, sure, it looks nice all written out that way, but in the real world you either get $1,000,000 or you get $0. you don't get $500,000. ever. so option B becomes a pretty safe and savvy choice.

actually, I suppose in the real world you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who offers this sort of jackpot thing.

Well, I chose "B". I'll take the sure thing any day and work with it.

Swami, where did you come up with the $500K? I admit, I'm not very smart when it comes to math. Based on the question, I took "C" as meaning that there was a chance you could win more than in "B", and also a chance you could win nothing at all.

Why $500K?

it's the average of 1,000,000 and 0. the average is 500,000. but real life doesn't conform to weird mathematical things like that. or rather, it does, but only once it's past.

anyone who chose nothing or the flip one is a dumb nut.

Oh, I dunno about that. I think it depends on what $1,000,000 means to the individual.

How about if we were talking $10 vs. $100. Actuarially speaking, this is the same bet; $1,000,000 is ten times $100,000, and $100 is ten times $10.

I have a feeling if the values were $10 and $100, most people would chose the card, even though they're the same bet, actuarially.

This is the same misconception people have playing the lottery. A 20,000,000 to 1 chance of winning $10,000,000 for $1 is a very, very, very bad investment of the $1.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.
