tyvek as good as filter discs (without foil in closet)
    #3419849 - 11/28/04 04:43 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

afoaf had used filter discs from fungi perfecti in the past. Because of certain changes, like price, he has switched to tyvek because of the great things he has heard about it. He drilled four holes(area of holes equals 3/8 of an inch) the same size when he used the filter discs in the past. Only thing that changed, was the filter type. Now that the holes are small, and no significant of water would be lost, would it be okay to take the foil off that was used while pressure cooking? My friend has always kept them in a clean closet.

Basically my friend wants to know if they ARE actually just as reliable without the foil covering them as far as contams go?

btw: my first post, but have searched and searched already for other peoples question's and answers already.

Tyvek is as good as any filter disk. Foil is there only for the PC to hold in the moisture..shouldnt be a problem after they cool though.

But do they compare up to the 99.97 or whatever percent the filter discs from fungi perfecti guarantee. My friend doesn't want to be disappointed when they contaminate using this new procedure. Even a slightly lower percentage could spell disaster.

in my experience they tyvek is better than commercialy available filter disks,
I purchased some about 3 years ago and used them in a comparison with tyvek,
I had no contam problems with tyvek because it's made from HDPE, thats spun
into a flat sheet thats repels water, the commercial filter disks absorbed
water and lead to contams in 3 of the 10 jars that they were used on.

the FP filters have a higher air permeability than the tyvek which in my
opinion reduces the effectiveness of the filter unless it's coated with an
anti-microbial compound thats capable of killing anything thats wicked into
the filter. take one of each filter, dip it into water for a minute, withdraw
and shake them a couple times, you'll notice the tyvek remains dry due to its
laminated composition and the spunbond FP filters will still be wet.

a little info on the tyvek for comparison purposes.
