Well i'm trying to dry a small amount of mushrooms,Say like only 4 medium sized caps w/ about 4-5 inch stems. My Q is how much CaS do I need to dry then, i'm using a container that is 5 inches tall and 6.5 inches in diameter,,so it's not very big, I have a bunch of damp rid but i dont want to waste it, i've used about 1/3 of a cup to half a cup and it seems to be drying Very slow, I could dry it faster with a fan. That slow. O yeah and i've heard it takes about 6 days for them to get "cracker dry", does that sound about right? Thankx.

I always got the impression that Damp-Rid and the like served better as a final step to get the shroomies absolutely "cracker" dry. Many use fanning devices, or food dehydrators (with the heat source either off, or disabled) to get most of the moisture out. From there, Damp-Rid will pull out any remaining traces of water.

Yes fan dry then use damprid to make cracker dry.
You can re-use damprid by baking at 400 degrees for like half an hour.
If you don't fan dry and just try drying with damprid, it will take a long long time.

yup. the desiccant works best with small amounts of moisture. fan or air dry first and then place in sealed container with the desiccant (making sure that the fruits are not touching the powder!). depending on the humidity level of the desiccant (how much moisture it has already absorbed) the fruits should be cracker dry in 2-4 days. results may vary.
