calcium chloride from spore haven-damprid alt?

Damp rid is pretty much non existant in AZ (HA! Damprid in AZ....the dryest place known to man )so i just bought a bag of calcium chloride from sporehaven. 2 lbs for 3 dollars......anyway, since im new to this area and all, this is the stuff that is in damp rid that dries out the shrooms right? Damp rid.....lol, not in AZ! so this will work the same?

I think calcium chloride is dessicant/damp-rid/dri-rite. Save yourself the 2lb shipping cost and use some epsom salt!

Buy some epsom salt from your local drug store, bake it in the oven at 400F for 45 mins and use! It may come out of the oven as one big block, smash it! Try not to keep in in humid air for a long time because it absorbs fast.

yes it is chemically the same. I don't know what physical form it is in though. Maybe in little balls like damp rid? Damp rid is excelent because it lasts for a long time and you don't recharge it. it just slowly disolves. you may want to make a damp rid style container for it. Remember to fan dry first though.

why do you need to fan dry first? why not straight into the calcium chloride chamber?

it just doesnt seem to work as well unless you give them a pre-drying fan treatment

yah. very simple. Dessicant is for finishing the drying process. it will remove the last bit. Damp rid isn't re usable. If you fan dry first, it will last for a long long time. If not, you will use up your dessicant quickly. they will also dry faster if you start them with a fan.

my attempt to directly dry the shroomies on the epsom salt tek resulted to create dried very dark shrooms. on the other side, if you fan them first and then put them in the dry-chamber, then the colour of shrooms remains okee.

The good thing about empsom salt is you can put the mushrooms directly on in. After 24 hrs fan drying i put the mushrooms right on the epsom salt and their dry in 1-2 more days :smile:

i use a 18" circular fan for the whole process.
get a shoebox and cut out the bottom except 3/4 inch all around the diameter.  do the same for the lid. now get some chicken wire or wire mesh with 1/8 to 1/4" openings and secure it to the holes in the top and bottom of teh box. raise teh fan above the ground to allow max CFM (airflow) and just set the box on teh fan; hi is ok until they start to dry after they dry sometimes it blows little chunks of dried broken cap and pins all over the room; switch to med or low after 6 hours or so.
and i need to mentoin that dry time is variant with how many shroomies you pack into the shoebox; too many and it may take a few days but the equivilant of 1 dry ounce should not take more than 24hrs to dry in a semi dry climate (~55rh)
also i use a size 11 shoebox  :grin:
