Damp-Rid v. Silica Gel
    #661757 - 06/04/02 05:16 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Hi. I can't find any anhydrous calcium chloride (Damp-Rid) anywhere in this town! And I need to dry my first harvest, which will be ready to pick in a day or two. I have found the stuff the crafty folk use to dry flowers though. Can anyone here tell me whether it is a bad idea to use silica gel crystals to dry the crop? You have to cover the plants in the crystals and they suck all the moisture out of them without affecting their structure or shrivelling them much. It APPEARS that you can just brush the crystals off. Also, they are non-toxic. So, good idea or bad idea? Has anyone had any experience with silica gel crystals?

Damp rid sucks ass. It turns into a slimy weird juice. You can only use damp rid one time. Silica gel is reusable, after baking in the oven to dry it out. I prefer silica gel. I would just buy some at a local craft store, in the flower section. I dropped my cell phone off my kayak the other day, into the abyss of a lake. I recovered the phone and after 2 days in my silica gel chamber, she was ringing again!

Don't let the crystals touch the cubies. Its ok if a little does but try to avoid this. Don't cover the cubies. I take a peice of plastic mesh, the kind you use to cover holes in the bottom of bonsai pots, and place this on top of te crystals. I then put my cubies on top. This allows the air to move freely between the crystals and the cubies.

I use damp gone. This stuff is for drying out closets and sinks. It comes in a bag that is placed in a small bucket. You can reuse this stuff over and over again. All you have to do is microwave or bake it. I have never tried damp rid.
