Oatmeal as substrate??
    #3336741 - 11/09/04 12:13 PM (12 years, 27 days ago)

As I was enjoying a bowl of oatmeal this morning, I began to wonder if it could be used as a substrate. Possible 30/70 verm/oatmeal? Has this been tried yet?

I think someone is doing it with 7 grain cereal... I think oat meal was explored too, but can't remember anyone posting about how it went.

Oh yeah... this is one of those hardcore post... I think it was one of the first items on the list... You are hooked when you start to wonder if everything you see is potential substrate.

I know I've seen it done. There was a thread around last year. Try a search here or in advanced cult.

The only thing I think oatmeal would lack would be an airy substrate consistency. I don't know how much that would hinder growth, but I imagine it would take a little longer to colonize than rye grain/wbs, I'm sure it's probably very nutricious though for myc.

hit what i was thinking on the head there Silven. Oatmeal gets kind of gunky and gooey after it's cooked, it'd be like what happens in a PF jar when you add a bit too much rice flour to the mix and it gets all gunky at the bottom. mycelium won't eat through that.

i think it could be used ground up like in the PF tek though.. I may just try that here as soon as the pressure regulator for my pressure cooker arrives in the mail.

Actually I had tried a search for this, think I did "oatmeal and substrate" but it turned up about 150 pages of hits..lol..seemed a bit odd.   Thats a good point about the oatmeal getting gooey, I can see how that could cause some problems.

I do believe that you would have to treat it like a whole grain.

You would need to rinse it before cooking to get rid of the excess starches that make it turn into goo.

From there, adding vermiculite to get that airy consistancy should be easier.

Has anybody tried using whole oats?
