oatmeal or bran for substrate

Next year I move out to a farm and will have unlimited access to straw and dung (horse, cow, buffalo, elk even bear) but Till then I'll have to learn all sorts of crazy ways to grow with different substrates due to my lack of verm and all (small town).
I know theres better ways out there and am currently doing other experiments but anyone know about oatmeal or bran as a substrate?
The average portion of oatmeal contains 67 parts carbohydrates, 16 parts protien, 2 parts mineral, 7 parts water, and a great source of vitamin B1. I'm not sure what mushrooms need to grow abundantly I'll have to look around but if that sounds good then any suggestions before I get out my P.C. would be helpful.

People have been adding bran flakes to their substrates with considerable success for some time now. I personally have only used oatmeal and bran flakes as substrate supplements , but they worked quite well. The main adversity you'll come across with using only these ingredients as a substrate is getting enough water content without suffocating the mycelium. The oatmeal and bran flakes clump together a whole lot making it hard for proper airation. That's what verm is for, but I guess your lack of verm is the problem...

so do you think a 75% brown rice, 25% oatmeal or bran mix would work well? Maybe even 50/50. I've currently got some birdseed going that seems fairly soggy maybe I'll try mixing in some oatmeal next time.

Regarding bran: it's my understanding that too much bran will increase the chance of contams by raising the protein/nitrogen levels. This is what I read in the publication by R. Rush Wayne, Ph.D., "Growing Mushrooms the Easy Way Home Mushroom Cultivation with Hydrogen Peroxide." The bottom line is that it works well as a supplement to increase yields, but don't go overboard.

i recently started using whole grain brown rice..ive never been happier with the results.only prob is that the kernels smoosh together making it hard to colonize the middle but as long as your clean you wont get contams..and the shit fruits forever because its solid nutrition.i dont know if it was the strain i grew or what but i ended up with the most potent shrooms ive ever ate.
