Woodland Foray (pics), i.d. help
    #3320890 -

I went on a small foray a few weeks ago and i took some pictures.  I saw many species that i had not seen before, and many familliars.  I was able to pos id one of the new ones, the Red-Gilled cort, but not the rest.  I've included field notes of the pictures shown if anyone's up for the challenge(New England).

moss outcropping (lair of the red gills)

red-gilled cort(Cortinarius semisanguineus)

tree stump colony, notice the little gray guys

ibid. closer/ different angle

ok, un-id'd
Big Orange
-----------
cap: Orange, plane, dark specks, slight striations at edge, slightly darker circumscribed ring around margin

stipe: Ring remnants, becoming bulbous where attatched(tenaciously) slight darkening towards base.

gills: Medium spacing, attatched, yellowish-orange tint

stain: none

scent: slight, citrus or crayon like?

6" tall, 3 1/4 wide

spore print: performed sporeprint, however none was visible after 24 hrs, perhaps she was running on empty, or the print was white

habitat: single on dead tree stump; forest

comments: I was hoping this guy was a big gym, but it didn't match up enough for me to make pos id.

Little Grays
-------------
cap: conical, deeply striate from edge, brown pronounced umbo at top. some look visicid.

stipe: like a dandelion almost, fragile hollow.

gills: medium broad, whitish/pinkish buff

stain: none

scent weak, mushroomic

2" tall 3/4" wide

spore print: none, this small specimen seemed to dry up to quick, plus fell apart on ride home so i really only had pieces left.

habitat:  Gregarious clusters on dead tree stump; forest

comments: very interesting little guys, but quite fragile.

well there you go, if someone wants me to send the much larger clearer pics let me know.  Thanks and enjoy!

The pic with the uprooted tree looks like a bunch of earthstars. when you whack them, they spew out a cloud of green spores. the single mushroom there looks like a honey mushroom (armillaria mellea... spelling). If there was one, there were probably some more in the area. This season, which is my second season hunting, i have noticed that there are clumps of about 50 honey mushrooms with all of the caps chewed off!! I have no idea who/what could have done this.
Nice pics.

oops. upon further inspection, those are definitely NOT earthstars. From afar, considering the habitat, they resemble them. Probably coprinus sp. sorry bout that

No worries, there was no spore cloud about the little guys, although another feature that i didn't note originally is that they seemed to get darker when wet, which probably relates to the 'some seem viscid' note.

Honey Mushroom eh? Seems like the best candidate so far(too bad the buggies ate him all up), can someone else confirm this? I looked around for some more but that didn't last very long as the mosquitos were really getting active,  to the point where i was basically walking around in circles jotting down the notes as quickly as i could, because if i stopped for too long there'd be a swarm of them!  I realize lack of spore print is a big hinderance here but i think others have probably come across these before.  Thanks for the help!

the "darker when wet" is probably just darker when older. When coprinus age, they turn to liquid so that flies step in the goo and distribute the spores.
also, nice cort! I think corts are some of the most beautiful and perfectly formed mushrooms. I found a purple cort last week. Beautiful!
Also, I would wager that the shrooms in the moss in the first pic are some type of conocybe. could be deadly.

Heres a good close up:

Im not so sure that it's coprinus, i was under the impression that when they self digest, it starts from the edge of the cap and moves up, and it's something i would have noted.  Plus from the pic you can see fully mature specimens and it doesn't seem to be the case.  Coprinus was probably the best deduction based on the information originally provided.  We are getting closer, does the  closeup help any?

I can't really guess on those. It will be hard to identify them without a sporeprint. They look familiar, but I too often just gloss over the lbm's without learning more.

My first guess would be Psathyrella. A spore print will go a long way toward identifying these. Try putting a cup or bowl over the mushroom while making the spore print to keep the humidity up.

Happy mushrooming!
