Hello all, I checked back to see how those pins were doing today, and I noticed I had totally missed some fully matured specimens. So I present you with the first weilii fruiting of the year(6/15/01) The first one I found today wasn't in the usual patch, and it was a perfect mushroom, the best I found today. I was so excited! Went to check the main patch and sure enough there were more fruiting. The pins from yesterday are still fairly small but growing, so there will surely be more to come. Here are a few pics: Probably going to have to do this in two threads.

Wow! Just look at that. You must be living right L.K. I've decided that when I finally retire,I'm gonna spend my spring, summer and fall in Georgia and Florida, hanging out with Lizard King and GGreatOne,picking copes, cubes, pan subbs and weiliis. A question for you L.K.; are these from natural patches, or are they from patches you've sort of had a hand in? Just wondering. Congratulations either way. doo

100% natural, I've been too damn lazy to make an outdoor patch, although I really should, I live in the best possible place, 100 yards from the real patch :) I guess my psilosophy on the weilii has been why plant em when nature grows em for ya just down the street. Speaking of GreatOne, he should be heading up here in a few days to pick some Ps. weilii, you need to come on down too doo! I'd love to take you out picking weilii long as you don't mind hanging with a 20yr old kid :)

I'm not sure about the living right part :) I try. Its more luck I think. I mean, how lucky can you get? I found this weilii patch just down the street in walking distance, and then the subbs in a horse pasture I've lived next to my whole life, just a few hundred yards past the weilii patch! Two different magic species just hundreds of yards away from each other, and folks around here still think you have to drive to Fla. to find magic :) Maybe I'll take a group pick of the subbs and weilii together, I'll hit the horse field first, and then swing by the weilii patch on the way back. Yeah, thats probably what me and GG will do. It'll make for some good pics.

I'm really interested in the type of soil these are growing in. It looks like you are finding them in humous forest type soil, and red clay soil. I need to find just one and try to get it started in my area, which isn't too far from GA, I was just in GA today, but didn't have alot of time, well if I'd known weilii was fruiting I'd have made time. :) Have you found them to be fairly prolific in various parts of GA? I don't want you to give up your spots, just maybe tell me if I'd stand a chance, like I said, I just want a wild print and to study their growing environments.

well, the red clay is correct. they live under sweetgum trees. i beleive LK finds them growing best in some sort of brazillian grass (im remembering this all from last year, impressive eh?) :)

i reckon if they gorw roughly at the same latitude as atlanta then they will grow anywhere in GA. but thats a guess on my part. still tho, if i were you and had the opportunity to be in GA right now during all the wet weather i wouldnt be wasting time online, id be out FINDING the weiliis :) if you can ID them then get finding them man! just remember, sweetgum, red clay, i immagine if you can find an exposed area of mulch in the shade of a sweetgun tree then youll find em. mushrooms have a notorious way of growing exactly where youed expect!

Hey Mitch, I think the type of grass LK was finding them in was bermudagrass.Could have been centipede or zoysiagrass(maybe even St.Aug). I'm pretty sure it was one of the warmseason grasses. doo

Well, actually most of my sucsess is in semi-wooded areas rather than grass. They are a large psilocybe, and it has to be really damp for them to make an appearance in open lawns(usually later in the season towards fall) I have yet to find one growing in a lawn this year so far. But when they do show up in lawns, it seems they prefer bermuda grass lawns more than any other grassses, although I have seen them in other grasses before. Heres the secret to finding weilii. They flourish in areas where the soil was disturbed by construction. The most reliable and easiest way to find weilii, is to look in newer neighborhoods that were built anywhere from 5-10 years ago. Every dead end neighborhood has a cul de sac, usually a few. Well, if you've ever worked construction, especially in new neighborhoods, you'd know that all those trees and braches/limbs that get cut down get burried somewhere, and its usually in the woods at the end of a cul de sac. Find the trash hole or burry site in a newer neighbor hood and take a look around. Remember, they only grow from redclay, and from what I've seent hey prefer low grounds next to flood plains where the humidity is always high. So if you find a cul de sac in a newer neighborhood, and the ground consists mainly of redclay, and the area is low lying and moist, there will most likely be a few weiliis to be found. I'm not sure how far north they grow, but they were discovered in Cherokee county near the mountains, so that should say something. As long as the ground is still redclay and not rich black mountain soil, you have a chance of finding weilii.

Hell yeah, there is a recent sub-division near my house, and the dirt road they are building over is red clay. Some parts of it are new, like 1 or two years, other parts are old, like 5 or 6 years. I actually live in SC, but am a stones throw away from the Georgia border. Where I am positioned at, Atlanta is more east than south. That would be great! To find a weilii patch, plus my recent discovery in the local pasture thats like 1/2 mile from my house. I used to have bad luck finding magic, now it seems as if it may grow everywhere!!!
