mushrooms of nw arkansas pics
    #1569865 - 05/22/03 04:33 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

i have been finding mushrooms all over the place lately. these pictures are here for all to enjoy. i'll provide info about them when time permits, so they can be identified. i'll update as often as possible.

today's find:

found these growing in the grass on campus (sporeprints are in the making):

edit: these didn't drop any spores yet...still waiting to see if they do.

found in a woodchip bed. they were growing in clusters:

spore print is very light; looks brown. stem solid.

found this on campus in the grass, obviously baked by the sun:

sporeprint black. mushroom turned into...well, just mush

upload reached...more pics, info, and spore prints on the way.

another i found growing out of grass and dirt. i don't know what it is.

saved this from a redneck with a weedeater. i guess he has something against shrooms, because he was taking out the whole patch...and seemed to be getting much pleasure out of it.

more later....

i have no clue what these mushrooms are.

this was a little wierd. while dissecting the mushroom, i noticed it had a few different layers to it's cap, so i skinned it. this is the pic is of the "skin," seperated from the gills:

is that more like the real color.

lets hope someone else comes in here and helps you with the id. i have been blasting my brain with mushrooms all day for the last 5 days. i need a break for a while. maybe later i will help you out if you beg  although its quite simple. if you have a decent book of mushrooms with keys than you could at least find out the generas of those mushrooms. start with the family, since they are all obviously agaricales (gilled mushrooms). the spore print will tell you a lot with agaricales. LATER

You've got a lot of stuff coming up. Interesting specimens.

For the ones in your first post:

We need a spore print for the first one to get to genus. Nice looking specimen, though.
The second one looks like an Agrocybe, probably in the Agrocybe praecox group.
The third one is a Coprinus.

From the second set of photos, the one with the bulbous stem (Pict0008 group) looks a lot like a Tricholoma. It's immature, and that makes identification tougher. What kind of tree was it growing near?
The dark gilled one in the Pict0009 group looks like some sort of Agaricus. It looks a bit old, too. To have any chance at identification we need to know what it smells like and the bruising reactions. Please cut it in half vertically and scrape the inside with your knife blade (not gently - you're trying to bruise the flesh). Then watch for color changes. They can take up to an hour, but most will occur within a few minutes.

From the third set of photos, the one with the very crowded, very white gills looks like a Collybia. What kind of trees were nearby?
The second one suggests Psathyrella to me.

The fourth set of photos look like Coprinus, similar to Coprinus comatus, as irolltrss suggested. If they are, then you got to them while they were really young. Again, if they are, then in a few hours the gills should turn black and begin degenerating into ink-like slime. An odd feature you can use to help identify these while fresh is to cut one in half vertically. In Coprinus comatus the stem will be hollow with one thin thread running down the center. There will be no bruising.

Hope that helps some.

Happy mushrooming!

i found that one a couple weeks ago. i believe it was growing nearest to an oak, but there are also ginkos and a cedar nearby.

it was on a freshly seeded and strawed hillside, with some oaks and maples.

yes, they were coprinus. i went back to check on the clusters i left behind for the next few days. they got bigger and when they opened up, they looked like the classic coprinus pictures you see in id books. then they turned into giant masses of black slime, covered with flies ready to spread the spores around.

now, for today's pics:
Xerula is my guess on this first one. it has a root stem and left a massive, thick white sporeprint.

next: Paneolus ? i'll see if i can get a pic of the print later. this was growing in tall grass.

upload reached...more to come.

beautiful pics. i would agree on Xerula id for the first one.

since im in the library, i cant verify the id on the second one. it sure looks like a panaeolus from the side but the gills dont look much like panaeolus.

are the mushrooms in your second post yellow or is it simply the lighting?
if they are, i must say Leucocoprinus birnbaumii comes to mind. it used to be Lepiota lutea.
http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Leucocoprinus_birnbaumii.html

in the spore print of the Pan-like species, what is the color of the print exactly? is it brown or are those reddish tints really in the print?

the small brown mushroom are tough to id because of the lack of detailed pics, a good description, or a spore print. are they agaricales or boletales?

1. the mushrooms were more of a tan color, but there was a hint of yellow in the younger fruits.
2. the print is a light brown color with no reddish tints.
3. i am not sure which small brown mushroom you are referring to, but it is
definitely agaricales; i have not posted any boletales yet.

i spotted the bolete barely outreaching the grass it was growing in and found the tiny mushroom growing right next to it.

more boletes and a xerula:

i don't know what these are, but they are the worst smelling mushrooms i have ever found. they smell like bleach. the spore print was cream colored. i found them growing in the grass under the same tree i found the boletes.

in your second set of photos right above this post:

1. Russula sp. it may be hard to identify to species though because of its deformity. Russula's are tough anyway. look around R. rubbipurpurea (not sure on the spelling) or R. mariae. it is some kind of red russula obviously.

2. definately a boletus species looking at the features. intense yellow pores, bruising blue.

3. the LBM's, no idea. need details and spore print.

4. more Russula's obviously. if you get a decent Russula key, they should be a bit easier to id because of there prominent odor.

nice finds.

the big one is another of those nasty smelly russulas and the little ones look like some sort of galerina.

you can't tell from the picture, but the gills almost have a lavender tint to them. i don't think these are going to drop any spores; they were a little dry when i found them.

i don't eat any mushroom, unless i am 110% percent sure i know that it is safe or i grew it myself. thanks for the advice, though. it is appreciated.

this mushroom had pinkish gills, though it is hard to tell from the pics. the print is solid black and very thick.

This last one is from the genus Agaricus. Unfortunately, Agaricus is a difficult genus to identify to species in. Many of them are among the best edibles to be found, and many of them are poisonous. None are lethal, and none are active.

You need to actively bruise the inside of fresh Agaricus specimens to get the bruising reaction. Try scraping it with your knife edge.

The odor is also very important for identifying them.

Happy mushrooming!

unfortunately that mushroom has been thrown away. i found it on the 3rd or 4th. i cut it in half and i didn't notice any bruising. i found the Chlorophyllum molybdites the same day or the day after that mushroom and noted that they smelled extremely similar.

today's finds:

the small one:

i think the small one and this one are the same species:

this is the same species that is in my last post. the first pic in this post shows the lavender ring at the edge of the cap much better. the gills are the same color as that ring, but it has proven hard to get a true-to-color picture of them.

this season's first puffball:

all but the puffball are currently in the printing process. if anyone ever wants spores from the mushrooms in this thread, pm me. i have kept many of the prints from the mushrooms that dropped spores.

i would really like an id on this one if anyone knows what it is.

i found this mushroom next to a creek, growing out of the side of a fallen tree. it had an extremely dense (almost wood-like), smooth white stem. the stem was about 3 inches long. i didn't get the whole stem, because it would not let go of the tree. it took three firm tugs, before the stem broke at the base.

the cap is smooth, with no raised scales. it is about 4" in diameter. those brown spots on the cap rub off. the cap feels moist to the touch.

the mushroom didn't have much taste to it, but i did notice a slight mushroomy smell when i chewed on it. i thought it had more of a a freshly cut cucumber smell when i crushed it up, though.

the gills are not attached.

the sporeprint was a rusty color when wet, but after it dried it had a lighter color.

i found these while out golfing.

i believe the one on the bottom left is amanita farinosa. it was growing under a pine tree. it left white "powder" on everything it touched.

more pictures will be added tomorrow.

i found a lot of mushrooms out on my hikes today. unfortunately, my camera's batteries were dead. so, no pics from the hike. i brought a few mushrooms home. from left to right: ?, amanita. ?, and chantrelles. those chantrelles and amanitas were growing all over the place.

Do the suspect chanterelles have veins, instead of gills?

Like this picture?

Then you need to get to work on cleaning those things and find some recipes

Thems good eatin'

I like them sauteed with garlic, butter, and a pinch of salt. You could throw some pickled jalapenos into the mix if you're into spicy food as well, the two textures goes well.

thanks for the tips. they tasted great. i put them in a small frying pan with some olive oil, butter, and garlic. i added in about half a jalapeno too. i'm going to go back for more later this week or next weekend.

i didn?t find what i went out looking for today, gyms, but i did find about 30 different species and took over 100 pics. unfortunately, they all have file sizes far too large to upload. i will have to resize them as i get the time to. here?s one to start off with.

i have a few prints from these mushrooms. pm me if you want one.

Laccaria sp.

i have more pics of this species coming later. the gills on it are a lavender color and are very thick and widely spaced.
the sporeprint was white and very light.

The one with the lavender gills is some kind of laccaria, and the previous mushroom is Armillaria mellea or A.ostoyae if it has a white spore print.

The polypore before that is probably some species of Fomes.

The slime mold i don't know, but they ussually change shape when they produce spores and are easier to identify then.

this is one ugly fungus:

falcon - thanks for the input.
the one you said is an Armillaria does have a very white sporeprint. i thought it could be A. mellea, but i'm not confident enough to munch on it.

*i added a sporeprint pic to my 10/09 post and a coral pic to the 10/16 post.

Better safe than sorry, I collected honey mushrooms for three years before i tried one. And better you know exactly what you are collecting.

That last ugly polypore looks like a smaller stalked version of one that I find around oak trees that I haven't been able to identify.

I ussually don't find them to often, but this year was wet and they seemed to love it. They seem to like when the weather is cooler too. Laccaria ochropurpurea IMO is a choice edible.

I find a lot of the orange jely fungus at the clear-cut burn sites that are a few years old here. I wonder if there are any look alikes that would discourage one to eat them outright (save for their general appearance). Eric-The-Red-- what has the weather been like there (highs and lows)? I couldn't imagine it being much milder than here- but it seems it would have to be.

i pulled away a piece of a dead tree to find a rotting mushroom's corpse inside. i thought that was a strange place for a mushroom to be hiding.

i found a nice patch of blewitts a week ago. i just identified the mushrooms on saturday. those are a beautiful purple color when they are young. i went out today, but didn't find a whole lot. these pics are still from "the day of the mushroom" back in october.

Hello, I must say I am impressed with your myco-knowldge, I to live in NWA, I have seen several different species on U of A campus "I have to frequent it" any way My question for you is, Have you ever located any P-Cubensis, or Paneolus Cayn, in NWA I have been a amature MYCO-NUT for about 10 years. i have never located etheir species in NWA. It seems you will start to find them down in central AR "like CONWAY, or LITTLE ROCK".
There are allways the Paneolus "Hay maker mushrooms" Let me break it down a little simpler Have you ever located any active specis in NWA?

i have never found, or even heard of, any p. cubensis growing here. i don't think they are here, but you never know.

there are a few species of panaeolus that grow here. the only active panaeolus that i've found here is panaeolus subbalteatus. you can find them during the warmer months (may-aug.) in cow fields and composted yards or gardens.

since i was in junior high, people have been telling me that liberty caps grow here. i didn't believe it the slightest until late october of 1997. i met up with some of my friends that were tripping on what they said were liberty caps that they found in a cow field. there were none left to look at to confirm what they had eaten, but the description sounded like liberty caps. you might want to keep an eye out for them during october & november.

hope this helps some.

Now those boletes are bad to eat right? Because they are look-alikes. Hehe sorry I am new at this you guys. But you can tell those are them because they don't have gills they have pores correct? Sorry about the dumb questions guys, but this is fun!

yes, the mushrooms on page 1 with the pores are boletes. i'm not sure if they are edible, since i didn't id them to species.

i went on a hike, searching for some waterfalls today. the waterfalls weren't all that spectacular today, but i did find some interesting fungi today.

it has been pouring here for a few days. the rain brought a cold front, so i didn't expect to find much fungi-wise today. it was around 40-50F.

sitting on a 2 foot log in the middle of the trail was a nice cluster of oyster mushrooms.

i found orange jelly everywhere and also some cup fungi. i also met a cool couple that was out searching for morels. they had no luck today, but they said they found 12 morels out there a few days ago, so i'm going back after it warms up.

it was a great day in the woods.

big score earlier this week:

a little west of little rock, in ferndale, i saw an area that was probably 50'x50' that was covered with chantrelles. i was on the job and we were already behind schedule, so i didn't get much time to pick them. it seriously would have taken all day to pick as many as i saw; this was the motherload. while my boss was waiting for a security gate to open, i jumped out of the truck and picked about 5 lbs. in about 2 mins. right next to the truck. that was all i had time to get. :frown: i also found a few in hot springs around lake hamilton, then even more when i made it home to fayetteville.

previously, i had only found chantrelles up in northern arkansas and they were always yellow. the ones i found over the last few days were orange. i've already eaten many of them and i have noticed no difference in taste. both the yellow and orange ones are wonderful.

pics coming soon if i can get my camera back in action.

hmmm....i forgot to post those chantrelle pics. i have no idea if i even have those still. oh well, i took some interesting pics to post today. these aren't necessarily a "find," since i helped mother nature out with this grow.

i found a few reishi growing in my yard and used its spores and some liquid spawn to inoculate these stumps (one was a full tree at that time).

there have consistently been a few growing around the stump at all times for a couple months, but nothing around the tree. so, i cut down the tree a few weeks ago and made a big bonfire out most of it. i didn't end up burning the very base of the tree and left it down by the lake. the whole thing is nearly colonized now.

the stump left from the recently-cut tree has thrown off a lot of mushrooms over the last week. unfortunately, i think the cold weather may be killing them now.

the stump (that was a stump at inoculation) is still putting off some good mushrooms.

Awe Some post ! !!

Hkcewowl Pics .

Nice one with tha reishi .

When you said "then even more when i made it home to fayetteville"
I read it as fatteyville - thinking it was a stoner euphemism for a ganjified home haha .
I went shroom scavenging in a valley today but found - less than three mushrooms - Unbelievable .
Oh well I have more than made up for it now - thank you .

i found these growing out of a dead log behind my house last november. i photographed them a few days after i found them. as you can see, most of them were pretty rotten by then.

these were growing on a leaf pile. i identified them as a species of leucocoprinus.

these uglies were growing from the roots of dead tree i knocked down a few years ago.
